Spring breaker falls off Beach motel roof | beach, dial, humphreys - News - Northwest Florida Daily News
A spring breaker from Crossville, Tenn., fell off of a slanted metal roof and landed on his face Tuesday night, Panama City Beach police said. Jonathon Dale Dial, 20, had "been drinking all day" when he returned with some friends to the Super 8 Motel at 11004 Front Beach Road shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday night, said Maj. David Humphreys.
Dial climbed over a railing and onto the roof while holding a "big Coke bottle." Apparently the roof was directly in front of his room. But before he could get to the balcony, Dial then slipped and fell about 15 feet. When a Panama City Beach police officer arrived, the officer noted that Dial appeared to have facial fractures, loss of teeth and possible head injuries.
Even if spring breakers are not driving, it is important to have one sober person in the group to watch out for the others, Humphreys said.
"People should consider that there are hazards with drinking too much and being in areas where they can harm themselves," he added.
It is a misdemeanor to climb on balconies on Panama City Beach, Humphreys said, but he doubted that his agency would charge Dial with anything. Humphreys described the ordinance as a "preventative" measure.
"At this point, you would be adding insult to injury," Humphreys said. "What are you accomplishing?"
