Right here!
30AShopper:

It doesn't surprise me that you do not agree with my interpretation, but kindly do not tell me what I understand. I can do without your condescending attitude.

You do what "you do" out of self interest. You just have to look at it realistically to understand it. You are greedy.

Modern day greed started when success became as a sign of self worth, and people started to view themselves through other's eyes. This self conciousness was aided by television. TV commercials always showed people painfully aware of themselves, and made the viewer into those people. Also when people have equal opportunity, as in this country, they don't have a lot of excuses for not succeeding. They can't say that they are stuck in the peasant class. The connection between success and worthiness seems a lot stronger in this case.

The other thing is that success (self-worth) is defined by how much money and toys you have. The toys are especially important because you can put them on display and everyone can see them. I think greed really kicked in after WWII when we became an amphetamine fueled consumer society and people were working like good little gerbils on the treadmill so that they could have lot's of money to buy toys and make the Joneses envious. Of course if the treadmill didn't pay out enough, you could always finance your toys through debt. Just look at how many people have Kitchen Aid mixers they've bought on credit that they never use.

With everything that's going on in the world....especially within our country, the fault finding, the back and forth banterings, the talk talk talk, etc. I just have had this need to explore "greed"- what it is, how far back can I remember the feeling of greed, how far back I can explore it. Does it go back only to the time of Genesis or further. I do know fear is greatly involved. I think of it as imprisonment.....that's just thoughts for now.

well, you probably are getting more than you asked for in this discussion; but, I am glad you posted. This topic is similar to the discussion on race that is beginning to happen around the country. One that we need to talk about. I found this article interesting having to do with current events:

What I am saying is - everyone is greedy. The results of which may be negative or positive. In the end, we accomplish nothing without greed.

...it depends on what you consider as "accomplishments."

What about the person who puts their life on hold to help a friend or family member through cancer treatment and then through hospice?

Or how about the successful college student who quits early to take care of his siblings when both his parents die in a car accident?

.

Doesn't this just scratch the 'intellectual surface' of what greed is and how it drives us?

Look at it a little more closely. Does Bill Gates fund his foundation because it makes him feel sick about how his money and interest is being spent?

"Everything we do voluntarily is driven by some form of personal self interest."

What I am saying is - everyone is greedy. The results of which may be negative or positive. In the end, we accomplish nothing without greed.

Your last statement is very collectivist.

What do they both get out of the experience personally?
