This is great news. Hats off to our Commander in Chief for handling this in a oh-so-not Jimmy Carter manner:clap: I hope this makes the thugs think twice before messing with another American vessel.

Exactly ... too bad it is likely they will just pick on someone else, since so much of their economy is based on piracy!

Kudos to all involved on this one.

Yes. He is a new President, and can be easily tested as Commander in Chief--but I think he is up for then test! Next stop, Iran and North Korea..

I still don't understand why the merchant vessels aren't armed in some way. I believe I'd be packing if I were in that area.

Maritime Law is pretty strict on what, if any, weapons are allowed on merchant ships. It's not much. That much I do know. I'm sure they would arm themselves to the teeth if they were allowed...

What a relief that these losers didn't get the chance to spirit the Captain away into the wilds of Somalia to send out annoying and antagonistic videos demanding a bunch of crap for his safe return.

The thing I don't understand is how the 'pirates' manage to stop the freighters in the first place. I used to see these vessels up close in New Orleans and they are huge;the deck seems like it is hundreds of feet off the water's surface.

Same reason airline pilots/crew aren't armed--the chance of a firefight around so much potentially explosive cargo is more dangerous than the chance of being pirated.
