How did you do it or what finally worked for you? I've got to quit smoking and there's no time like the present.

For the record I have tried:

Cold Turkey
Patch
Gum
Orange Juice
Meds

I haven't tried hypnosis, but if that's the next step I'll bite the bullet and go see madame snore in PC.

Good luck to you b/c it is sooo hard to do! I have managed to go 3 years, 18 months, and 4 months in the past but it only takes one to send me back to the habit.

Chantix. Has close to a 50% success rate. I quit using tobacco after 30 years, and my mom after 50 years. Been clean for over 2 years now. It takes some work on your part but not near the work the others have, I quit in less than a month and half with the last 2 weeks completely tobacco free. As Rob Schiender says in the the Water Boy, 'You Can Dooo It"

Statistically, the patch (and follow the directions to the letter on the box) works best, but there is more to any quitting method than the magic bullet- I know you know this. I'll be happy to coach you- call me! I want you to quit too.

Merman was an incredibly heavy smoker but when I got pregnant with Alex 23 years ago he had to give it up. My birthday is at the end of September and he set that as his goal date of ending (and he was as good as his word ).

What he did was take the preceeding summer to taper off little by little. Every week that went by he smoked less and less cigarettes. It took him several months to do it but since he was leisurely about it, he was successful.

And then he never, ever, never, ever had another cigarette in his life. What booze is to an alcoholic, that's what nicotine is to Merman. I guess that might be helpful to you, SWGB. Figure out in your head what kind of smoker you are. I used to smoke, stopped, and then about once or twice a year I'd have a cigarette, and I never craved another until the next year. I did that for years but I don't anymore because I've lost the taste for it--in fact, I've gone the other way in that I don't like the smell very much any more. The thing is, I knew I could do that inasmuch as Merman knew he couldn't.

Figure out how you're going to handle being a non-smoker and calibrate your mind-set accordingly. It's a really big thing to decide if you're never, ever, never, ever going to light up again. As you're quitting, work on your end-game so that your resolve will be cast in stone on your last day.

I'm glad you've made the decision to stop, too.

Chantix. It worked wonders for me. Been clean for nearly two years now. Once you quit, you will look back with shame at yourself for ever having fallen victim to this intentionally addictive nasty habit. The disgusting odor of cigarette smoke - especially on people - will be enough to keep you smoke-free. You can do it!!!!!

Get the cigarettes away from you and do not "have just a puff and I'll start again tomorrow". Google the little list of positives that start to happen when you quit smoking or look here Stop Smoking Benefits Timetable, consult it regularly for positive reinforcement 'cuz sometimes it is going to SUCK!! Since you have tried quitting before you know that there will be times when you can think of nothing else..it is literally an anxiety attack and it is not real. It is certain that a situation will arise and you will try to justify having a cigarette because "this" situation is horrible and "I can quit again once I am through this". Bull**** and you must plan for the gibbering monkey of addiction to attack you this way. Forewarned is foreamed. When you have managed to make it a few weeks without cigarettes the monkey will try and convince you that you can have one now just to prove you have quit. Kick that little b*stard in his teeth and DO NOT DO IT!! Alcohol and social situations must be avoided for a minimum of a few months, your inhibitions will be reduced and you will feel unincluded and left out when everyone is out on the deck drinking and smoking one of those "little slivers of heaven" -these feelings are not reality they are the gibberings of that EFFING monkey again. Be prepared to put on weight as when you are eating you won't be craving a cigarette but when you overeat it will make you want one worse and then you will eat again to stave off that craving... ad nauseum. If you put on 20lbs so what, it can be lost and as you do not appear to have the food issues that I do losing the weight will not be tough for you.
When you are feeling the craving take a really deep breath, simulating the deep inhalation from the first drag when you used to light that gay up (couldn't resist). The craving will be manageable for the moment..it may come back in 2 minutes or 2 seconds just breathe again and go find something active to do. Begin exercising to battle the bulge and also establish new habits. I smoked 2 to 3 packs a day. I smoked while I cooked, I smoked while I bathed, I would've smoked while I smoked if I could've. When my wisdom teeth were removed I smoked through my nostril. You must begin establishing your habits all over again but without the association of smoking. I have been quit for three years now, maybe four, you can do it. It is like a bad break up when you are the one who has been left. Smoking will consume your thoughts then after 2 weeks you may realize "Hey, I haven't thought about a cigarette for 10 minutes!". That 10 minutes of peace will become an hour, then a half day, then a day, week, etc.
Though never for a minute think you have totally won. Be proud oft he ongoing accomplishment but that monkey is a part of you forever even if his voice is really small and easily ignored....until one day you don't ignore it and he is in charge again.
ETA: Oh and my dreams were messed up too, really vivid and I had to pee a lot during the night because I was less dehydrated I think (purely anecdotal). The above posters are right, you won't stink like a ciggy anymore and it is really nice, no more phlegmy popping sounds when you are napping in the lazy boy either and your head is at a funny angle.

I'm still addicted to the nicotine gum after 10 years. Guess it beats smoking, but you will lose a few teeth!!!!
