Howdy, folks! My gang will be on our bi-yearly visit soon and we're even more wayward and destitute than usual. Can you share your ideas for best Grayton cheap eats? Yeah, yeah, Criollas and Bud and Alley's are great when somebody else is paying, but we're looking for great fish on a recession budget. What you got?

I'll let others chime who are in the know about the area restaurants. When we do our annual beach trip, we visit the fish markets quite a bit and cook our own. That's a cheap way to eat fresh!

Even that, though cheaper than eating out, is not cheap. Have you been to Goatfeathers and priced shrimp and fish lately? IMO, there are no "cheap" places on 30A.

The Red Bar's mahi-mahi fish sandwich at lunch has been consistently good, and runs like $8 or $9 with fries/salad/onion rings. For a little more than that, Gravel Road has a good grouper sandwich on their lunch menu. Fabrice's also has a good seared tuna sandwich for lunch that's in a similar price range.

restaurant.com has some great deals for gift certificates and if you search on them on this board I have posted some of their coupon codes where you can get another 70% or so off. I have never used them, but have had family do it and they say it works fine and saves them some bucks.

Zip code for sowal to search on is 32459. Do a 30 mile radius of that and it gets all the places up and down 30a that are participating.

Your best bet is to go to Goatfeathers or Shrimpers for fresh local seafood and cooking it yourself. It doesn't have to be fancy, some of the best seafood is simply steamed or boiled.

and if you drive across the tracks to the hood of the emerald coast - the long 1.5 miles north of the white sands and crystal clear water up in the SRB - you'll find a very inexpensive restaurant with decent food and fun. we are in the worst plaza around and please use the 4wd on your suv because our parking lot is so potholed out. but if you arent satisfied immensely i will buy your meal!

check out jambone baby

dont be scared....

98 next to the post office 1/2 mile west of 393 on the north side

JamBone is tasty. If you want to head even a little further north, Delta Kitchen just south of Freeport on 331 is a regular occurrence with us.

Seafood - if you do find yourself at the seafood market at Goatfeathers, go ahead and let them steam the shrimp for you. And pick up a container of their cocktail sauce. Fresh shrimp isn't cheap anywhere, but let them make it worth it for you.

Edit - just be sure to take the garbage with the shrimp shells out ASAP...

I think the Red Bar is pretty affordable; the menu is under $20/item at dinner and the portions are HUGE, you could easily share. Hubby and I are big eaters but we still carry food home or leave a lot behind. Dread Clampitt's live music is greatness so you add in entertainment and it's an even better deal.

I am also a fan of having Goatfeathers steam my shrimp, you can get a pound and a half of nice ones for what one shrimp basket would cost at a restaurant. Go to publix and get some nice bread, bake some potatoes, fix a salad and eat like kings!! We usually do this at least once/trip.
