I am speechless!

Children of Recession: Upload Your Video - CBS News

My Daddy died, Watergate took over Sesame Street, desegregation riots in my town, Carter Admin speaks for itself. And, I was oblivious, having a blast, exploring and living life! Why don't parents tell their children to go outside and play and turn off the computers/TV's?

I am not a parent; am I missing something?

Are they (parents and Katie Couric) exploiting children? Is there something good in this style? I just can't get my arms around this. You don't have to be wealthy to get through this mess.

We all have lived through 'economic downturns.' Anyone been interviewed for the national news?

We were raised different - many of today's parents make me want to scream.

Much more drama, much more publicity, much more media blaring 24/7.

Yes, bad things happened when I was a kid, but life went on and we were isolated/protected from it as much as possible. Tragedy or hard times meant you closed ranks and became a better relative, friend, or neighbor, not that you went on TV.

As usual, turning off the electronics so you can get a reality check goes a long way.

The town hall with the young adults was good but I have a feeling the ones being involved were far above the average teenager.
Your point is definitely well taken about the kids need to get out and play. I was raised sans TV, and in retrospect, I have never been sorry. That is not to say I grew up totally uninformed. My high school, for instance, had wonderful teachers who made you think and form your own opinions. I am not sure that is true today but I must admit I don't really know. I do know that in college they definitely try to guide you to their philosophy whatever it may be.
No, Lynnie, you are not missing anything and you will make a wonderful parent when you become one particularly if you raise your kids as you were raised.

I was certainly oblivious to finances as a child. I always viewed my family as "upper middle class." :rotfl:
Only in high school did I realize we were closer to upper poverty class!

However, I always heard the evening news. The rule in my home was inside the house before Walter Cronkite or you were locked out until supper was finished. My folks had to force us into the house unless it was raining. Different times.

We also had to watch the evening news, have our homework done, chores done and be cleaned up for supper in the dining room.

This series CBS is doing doesn't feel right to me at all. The little boy on this evening couldn't have been older than 8 talking about having to give all of his clothes away. Then, crying.

Something tells me it is the news producer, et.al. and the childrens' parents exploiting them. Children can be informed and taught how to view the news, use their cognitive talents.

We were told when times were tough! We went outside and played off the stress. I just don't get it. Oh well, I accidently had Katie Couric's channel on this evening. Glad I did.....now, I'll remember to keep turning her off.

when/if i have children, they will not have a computer. i didn't and wish i still didn't.

Good luck with that. Kids having computer access is not all bad- it is how you parent and enforce rules and guidelines that is the key, as in, the computer belongs to the parents, and the kids get to use the computer if they follow certain rules. If not- poof! Computer gone.

:rotfl:

I kinda' digg some rap now. I do not digg this series Katie Couric is anchoring. :pissed:

.

Andy, I am curious. What are you basing this statement on? Who are "they"? I'm not trying to pick a fight. I am just wanting some clarification of your comment.

Yikes, seems like exploitation to me.

I can't imagine anyone younger than say 13 actually being able to talk coherently about what is going on, and a 13-18 year old may understand some of it but certainly not all.

I agree, scooty, I hate all the drama and look-at-me nonsense I see around me (not everywhere, but certainly more than enough). This "story idea" just feeds into that.

I have talked to my kids about the economy only because I want them to understand that many families are going through a very tough time and it's a good idea to be sensitive to others. In addition we are talking more amongst ourselves about budgeting and smart choices. Emphasis on "amongst ourselves." Can't imagine trotting a child out to CBS.
