starting a 3 month round of chemo on Monday. Any ladies have experience with hair loss from Chemo? How did you handle it? wigs, scarves, ot something else ( a pirate cap and eye patch, perhaps). What advice could you offer? Thank you, thank you...Jennie:dunno:

my best friend just had her head shaved. she had beautiful long brown hair, her sister shaved it for her and cried the whole time. she's handling it very well though and said that she has a cute wig. i would do hats and scarves maybe. just remember this is temporary, your hair will grow back and be just as beautiful as before.

:love:I am very sorry you have to go through this.

I have never had to go without hair, but I'm thinking it would make me feel naked or something.

A friend of mine put nair on her head instead of the deep conditioner and left it on all night- no hair to speak of the next day. She got 2 or 3 wigs and still looked very pretty- wigs these days are cool looking.

Get a wig the color of hair you've always wanted to try and then you can change your real hair to that color when it grows back if you like your hair that color.

My grandmother was a hairdresser and I was always coloring my hair when I was growing up. As a little girl I wore "falls"(long hair wigs) and I just thought I was so cool. I wore the wide scarf headbands and it actually looked real good.

I've seen the madagascar scarf (my name for it) around perspicasity- I love that look.

My friend also had a shorter kind of layered wig that really framed her face well.

Its kind of like buying clothes , just try them on to see which ones make you feel the prettiest.

When my friends hair started growing back, she had it cut kind of layered and spiky- everybody loved it.

All the best to you.

I have helped lots of women handle hair loss...a week or so before you expect it to shed, go get a cute short- short hair cut...get several different hats...and wear them everywhere...I found my sister a hat that said
BAD HAIR DAY
Keep your laughter strong...read uplifting books..keep your friends and loved ones close...pray and talk to God daily. God Bless and an eye patch couldn't hurt...lol ...PS If you decide to get a wig..get the thinest one and take it to your hairstylist to fit it...your hair will be back before you know it........Jan

I'm a ten year survivor, but the hairloss memories are as vivid as yesterday. Here's how I handled it. I had my hair cut fairly short. Everyone is different, but my cells responded in a strong way to the first round of chemo, so by day 10 or so after the first treatment, I experienced a tingling sensation over most of my scalp, and it began to fall out. After a week or so of brushing out loose hair on the back porch, I convinced my roomate to shave my scalp. I rarely went in public without a wig, but think I might be a bit more bold if I had to do it over now. I would suggest getting some terrycloth turbans to wear while sleeping, even in a warm climate, the insulating value of hair is a big deal and sleeping in the turbans kept me from being chilled at night. They are easy to throw in the wash with the towels and made life easy. An all cotton woven hat works well for daytime. Hope this helps. Please pm me if you have other questions.

When I found out that I was having chemo, the owner of my hair salon gave me a bottle of Nioxin shampoo and conditioner and told me to use it prior to my first treatment. I did and amazingly never lost all my hair. I did cut it really short and at the end of the treatments it looked pretty fried. It took a couple of months for the effects of the chemo to dissipate. My hair came back thicker than ever.

I can't guarantee that you won't loose your hair. Chemo treatments vary for each patient so it may be different for you. Wigs, hats and scarves are always great options and you can have a new look everyday, if you want. The Nioxin is certainly worth a try. Ulta carries the products or can be ordered on line. Either way, good luck and God Bless you. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

My mom bought several wigs. Some were pretty expensive. But she loved her cheap ones the best. Specifically she loved a cheap one that had a black headband in the very front. (Here is a link to a similar one. Doris, Head Band Wig by Sepia - WOW WIGs.com) She found it the easiest to put on quickly and was the most comfortable one. She didn't have to style it or worry about it slipping. Sometime she's wore other ones but added a hat for the same reason.
