My nephew is a Down's Syndrome child of my Big Sister. Not only is there a chromosomal defect, but they can be very sickly. My sister's family was flown from Germany to Johns Hopkins for cancer treatment for my nephew and yes it was on the US Army's dime. He is now 24 or 25 and still a delight to all of us.

I do not have a family of my own, but I can be and will absolutely become pretty indignant if someone attacks my family. I can only imagine how the attacks this woman and family has endured has hurt them.

I applaud her for stepping down; she is placing her family first! I do still feel there is more information we aren't privy to at this juncture, but under no uncertain terms would I continue my family in a political spotlight when David Letterman has attacked my 14 year old daughter and an adult on a blog has attacked my Down's Syndrome Baby. Enough is enough.

I also restate that McCain/Palin was not my choice of candidates in 2008, but she is a strong woman and her family is very closely knit.......

She has proven that she won't drink anyone's kool-aid. That speaks mountains!

Well I wouldn't call my comment defensive, but if you want to, then I am defending the other posters' right to voice an opinion...most of the "fiery darts" as you call them are directed toward the political figures--not fellow posters.

Hate is a pretty strong word in my experience--I just felt it was an inappropriate label for the situation.

goodwitch, you are correct. It was inappropriate to toss a fiery dart toward my fellow posters. I do apoligize to those that I offended.

Reports today are that Palin resigned this weekend, but it was to cut her losses as she hasn't really been doing her job since the campaign ended and she knows things are only going to get worse in Alaska.

As for her doing it "for her family" - that ship sailed a long time ago. I think kids/family should be off limits to the media, but it's hard to cry "foul" when you choose to bring them into the spotlight and use them as part of your platform on certain issues.

Palin's ship may have sailed, but attacks by adults who obviously do not like her did not sail. They were still flying until last week, when the baby was attacked by an adult blogger.

We might be seeing conflicting news sources as I just saw her speech as to her reasons for resigning. For now, I don't care if she has designs on any other political office. I think she's protecting her family and I don't blame her. If she decides to announce aspirations on another office, I will evaluate her platform at that time.

Sorry, but how does her quitting her job "perhaps for a national role" protect her kid (the one she posed with on magazine covers and that she made repeated appearances with on national television BTW) from mean comments by a blogger.

I'm calling BS on that one.

Again, I think we are listening to conflicting news sources. She can pose on any mag. cover, but does that give mean-spirited adults the right to make blatant attacks against her children? I don't care if she wants to be President or Queen, mean-spirited attacks are doing nothing but showing the true colors of the attacker. Why were/are children of other politicians respected by the media, etc.? There is a double standard here and she's stood up to all of it.

Incidentally, her response to David Letterman was spot on! I applaud her for that one, too.......she is protecting her family and I don't blame her.

However, scooterbug, you are exactly correct.

FBI has now stated that there are no investigations against Gov. Palin. The blogger is now pleading the First Amendment. If Sarah Palin pursues a lawsuit, it won't be difficult to prove malice on the part of the blogger....as well as other 'media sources!'

Sarah Palin is one smart lady! Again, you might not have liked her political platform - I wasn't crazy about some of it either, but I do respect her as a human and a mother!

I did think this quote was clever:

"She can hunt wolves from the air and field-dress a moose, but she fears being a lame duck?" - Maureen Dowd
