I don't know if it even still exists, but at one time there was a squadron at Andrews Air Force Base that was called SAM. It stood for special activities mission or something like that.
The sole purpose was to provide transportation for VIPs to places they had to go. It was cost effective because not only did pilots get their need training and hours, it was also an effective method of providing transportation to high ranking government officials and elected representatives.
Now, we have to buy $200 million dollars worth of Gulfstream jet? Go figure.

They want to fly in a private jet, they either need to buy one THEMSELVES, or make friends with someone who has one.

I don't think we need to be paying for their travel unless it is on an official government trip - in which case they would need something bigger to accommodate everyone.

Clinton BORROWED a plane to go to N. Korea and negotiate for the release of US citizens - take note Nancy!

They do still have it. They have everything from King Airs (C-12's) all the way up to the President's 747...King Airs, Gulfstreams (yes, they already have some), 737's, 757's, and 747's. They are all painted just like the 747.
They are all operated by the 89th Airlift Wing.

 Ummm, what's wrong with 1st class?

Washington: The Democrat-controlled House wants to buy nearly $200 million worth of private jets so lawmakers and a few high-level bureaucrats can travel in style. We truly have an imperial Congress.

This is from your article and not only is it not true now, it never was.

And some have an outsized sense of privilege. In 2007, just a month into the new Democratic majority, Speaker Nancy Pelosi asked that taxpayers provide a jet that could make a nonstop flight to her Bay Area district. She reportedly wanted a luxury, stateroom-outfitted version of Boeing's 757-200 like those the vice president, first lady and Cabinet officials fly on.
And there was a lot of foot-stamping when the Bush White House said no.

Go here for the true story if you want it, this all the leg work I'm willing to do. snopes.com: Nancy Pelosi's Jet

Now that is one waste of taxpayers money. She is an ex First lady for pete's sake! I did not read the link, but I would think she is a private citizen at this point, I am outraged, outraged that we are still paying for her to fly places!

:rotfl:

Pelosi! Not Reagan.

I don't think they should just fly commercial, I think they should fly commercial coach! Let us see just a little sacrifice in these hard economic times for Pete's sake!!

The jet purchase is true. House Orders Up Three Elite Jets - Roll Call

The Air Force had asked for one Gulfstream 550 jet (price tag: about $65 million) as part of an ongoing upgrade of its passenger air service.
But the House Appropriations Committee, at its own initiative, added to the 2010 Defense appropriations bill another $132 million for two more airplanes and specified that they be assigned to the D.C.-area units that carry Members of Congress, military brass and top government officials.
Because the Appropriations Committee viewed the additional aircraft as an expansion of an existing Defense Department program, it did not treat the money for two more planes as an earmark, and the legislation does not disclose which Member had requested the additional money.

Shall we try to guess which Member requested the additional money?
