What I am suggesting is to please not take this discussion to the old thread that Mermy linked. If it remains here it may actually be a sane discussion. .... but over there ....that was a trainwreck created by a since banned member/conspiracy theorist lover.

H1N1 has already peaked in my daughter's HS, so the vaccine would be of little use now - I would presume. I would estimate close to 20% of student body has been affected. (not all were confirmed cases but students were out over the same time period with same symptoms).

Oh wow - did your daughter get sick? Other family members? I wonder if all school workers are to get the vaccine? I would imagine it is encouraged. Glad it peaked and is over for her and her classmates.

Thanks
G

As a Paramedic/ Firefighter, I would not be pleased. I have performed my job since 1985 and have never had a flu shot or been sick with the flu that I can recall. I have not decided whether I would get the vaccine, more because of the lack of information on the trials. If you see me show up at your house with a mask on, it may be more because of your symptoms than mine and this is one way I maybe able to protect you and me and anyone else I may come in contact.

Oh my cod can we please start over? Don't make us go back there.

It's a good question and I have no problem with mandatory regular flu shots for health care and military workers. Mr. TFT also has been required to get the (seasonal) flu shot for his work, which is just part of the deal.

For the general population, I'd say no way.

And for the swine flu -- well, in 1976 my mom was one of the first people in the area to get the vaccine for the swine flu outbreak of that year. She was the infection control nurse for a large hospital and as a result it was sort of her job to be the guinea pig. I think people like that understand that about the job going in. She was proud to do it and certainly felt it was her duty. It was kind of scary though because at the time, according to wiki:

I hope the vaccine is better tested this time around, but yes, I think you start vaccinations with the people whose job it is to do such things, then advance from there to the general public. As for requirements, absolutely not for the general public, even if it is ebola. If someone doesn't want to take it they should not have to take it.

I would hope you aren't really wanting to make healthcare decisions on my behalf. Unlike the military where you give up a significant portion of your rights to be there, I haven't a as public employee. You don't want your healthcare decision made mandatory why would you think I would? If this vaccine affect me or my family adversely are you or those I work for going to pick up the cost. As I have said in my previos post, I have yet to decide but I have some issues at this time.

When I said health care I was referring to hospital workers. I imagine if you are employed by a hospital they often require things like that. I did not mean that states should necessarily mandate it of a certain class of workers, but if you sign on to work somewhere and that is the standard or requirement set by your employer then you have the choice of complying or walking away.

Perhaps Skunky could let us know what is SOP for hospitals. Perhaps they all have different standards.

Mr. TFT and I were in Mexico when the swine flu first hit the news, and he was barred from entering a hospital setting for a week after our return until it was clear he had not been exposed. :dunno:
