Goodwitch,

The festival took place this past weekend in Oakland. www.eatrealfest.com. Maybe I typed the link wrong before, sorry.

They haven't set the date for next year's festival but I sure hope I can go. Better yet, we oughtta start a festival like that in this area! We have a small start coming up with the Sep 7 Eat-In at Raw & Juicy (details of that are posted elsewhere on Sowal)

The booth I mentioned was for a group called Food Revolution -- their website --
Welcome - Revolution Foods

I think we need them to help us mount a food revoultion in Walton County schools!

Susan, I was asking about the Sep 7 Eat-in...where is the post about that?

This just in about Locavore/Eat-In on Labor Day

Christin Gruber just sent this via e-mail -- she has done a great job planning and coordinating the Locavore gatherings in South Walton. I encourage Sowallers to attend, and sign up to help with set up, clean up, take pics, etc. She has listed items she needs help with in the message below:

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to let you know what's available around town and give a few more reminders and details about this coming Monday, September 7th's EAT LOCAL event!
I certainly am getting excited about it, I hope you are too!

Remember, this EAT LOCAL is a special one - we're joining in Slow Food USA's National Eat-in to provide our kids with real food!
As part of the campaign, Slow Food is lobbying Congress to allocate an additional $1 per day per child for healthier lunch items, to limit the junk food sold in schools and to teach children about food through farm-to-school programs and school gardens!!

WHAT: EAT LOCAL Potluck (food guidelines below)
WHEN: Monday September 7, 2009
4pm
WHERE: Raw & Juicy Organic Juice Bar and Cafe
we are the 3rd Airstream East of the Post Office in Seaside

Here's a reminder on our food guidelines:
The main portion of any dish should be from local or regional ingredients grown or harvested in Florida, Georgia, or Alabama (or the Gulf of Mexico). For example, zucchini bread should be made with zucchini that's as local as possible. But the flour, eggs, and other ingredients could be from anywhere, though if you can get them local--or organic?all the better. Any meat should be from organic or free-range animals. And yes, harvested can include wild plants, nuts, fish or game.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO INCLUDE A SERVING UTENSIL AND SIGNAGE FOR YOUR DISH!

* we will as always have plates, forks, and napkins - but bringing your own cuts down on labor and waste!
* carpooling or riding your bike is always a good idea!

WHAT I NEED HELP WITH:

  • set up/break down
  • an official shutterbug
  • anyone willing to lend their laptop for the evening
  • someone to "man" the computer station so above mentioned feels more comfortable about lending... :)
  • extra chairs (folks, you might want to bring blankets to sit out on the grass - it's gonna be a BIG group!)
  • this email to be passed along to those that might be interested in coming!!!
if any of this seems up your alley - PLEASE contact me!

WHAT'S AVAILABLE AROUND TOWN:

FOR THE HEALTH OF IT - Blue Mountain Beach - 850 267 0558
LOCAL: sweet peppers, jalapenos, zucchini, sprouts, ****ake mushrooms, and Kat's gorgeous mint and basil!
They have lots and lots of other wonderful produce and yummy food in stock as ALWAYS!

FARMERS MARKET - Saturdays 8-12noon in Seaside behind the Raw & Juicy Organic Juice Bar Airstream.
We know we will at least have: farm fresh organic eggs, preserves, honey, pears, and whatever else is growing in anyone's garden!

And remember, if you can't come on Monday, or you don't live in our area, at least check out the website: http://slowfoodusa.org/timeforlunch

and see what it's all about - maybe see if there are any Eat-Ins close to you, and if nothing else - SIGN THE PETITION TO GET REAL FOOD IN OUR KID'S LUNCHES!!!!!!

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions, or if there is anything you might be interested in helping with on the list!

With all of this said, I look forward to seeing you on Monday!

Until then,
christin

The School Lunch Epidemic

Adam Elenbaas
ht_angry_moms_070808_mn.jpg
The simplest explanation of the film "Two Angry Moms," reads from the homepage of the film's website: "It all started with my daughters' lunch. My husband and I were packing healthy lunches for our kids, only to find that we were being undermined by the school's offerings of junk food with no nutritional value. It made me angry. So I decided to do something about it. I made a movie."
At a time where the American Obesity and diabetes rates are reaching an all time high, there hasn't been a more important film about the dietary health of the nation's future. When children can regularly exchange whole foods and nutrition for sugar and junk food, in their own school cafeterias, it is an indication that consumerism has interfered with basic nutritional safety. "Two Angry Moms" takes a serious look at the unseen, and often ignored, dietary epidemic of the "school lunch."
After winning a number of independent film-festival awards, the Two Angry Moms are now taking their message on the road. For more information about the film and the toxicity of American school lunches, visit their website.
This Sunday, February 7th, in New York City, the Executive Producer will host a showing of the film, followed by a group talk and Q&A session.

Have there been any proposed changes or improvements to our school lunch programs?

These days it is even more important that we are serving decent food - it's the main meal for a lot of kids!

These days it is even more important that we are serving decent food - it's the main meal for a lot of kids!

If I recall correctly, one of our school board members, Mark Davis, replied to me on one of these school food threads back in late summer, telling me that he would look into this issue. I haven't heard back from him on that, and I don't remember seeing anything in either of the local papers about it -- but then, i've not been keeping up the last few months as well as I usually do with the local news.

Anybody here seen the School Board setting themselves on fire about healthy local food in the lunchrooms? Isn't this an election year?

At this point I am not as focused on local - more that the many poor kids are getting a decent meal.

When we were discussing it earlier many said it was pretty unpalatable - and I am hearing from teachers that there are a lot more hungry kids these days.
