I've seen emergency vehicles get through most areas even when they are heavily congested such as last week. The infrastructure will grow with time, but I don't think mowing down forests and expanding ever road into a 6 lane highway because of some traffic issues in the past week is a good idea either.

The new airport isn't going to be a light switch that will suddenly turn the area into a major destination over night, it will take time. That being said there will probably be major congestion at 388 and Hwy 79, but the remaining routes are at least 4 lane highways. It's also my understanding that many of the resort companies on PCB are already gearing up to have check-in kiosks at the airport and shuttles. The most profitable audience is a captive one.

I certainly agree with you about mowing down trees and paving over wetlands...not sure about the emergency vehicle's ability in the middle of Destin Thursday afternoon....but, maybe.

However, what I continue to wonder is why isn't there someone thinking outside the box about some things that could be done to make the situation better for everyone. In other places--other resort areas, there are things like traffic flow changes for peak times; like rotating check in check out times; it works in other places, why doesn't it work here?

It just doesn't make sense to me that we don't use creative thinking to make people safer and more satisfied...it's really customer service when you think about it.

Why not a task force made up of some one from the sheriff's office; someone from the TDC; some one representing EMS and Fire department; someone from county government; someone from the C of C; and a citizen or two...sit down and think about how peak traffic on a rainy summer day or a Saturday morning could be improved.

Seems to me it could be a welcome public service to our citizens and visitors alike; not to mention how it might alleviate some real safety concerns. :dunno:

I know that rotating check in/out times sounds like a simple solution, but it's not. Everyone is pretty familiar and used the the check in time of 3-4 pm and check out of 10 am. The reason that moving those times around won't work is two fold:

1.) Housekeeping, if you allow someone to stay until 2 pm in a 5 bedroom home and then send over housekeeping to get it ready for a 3 or even 4 pm arrival it's just not going to happen.

2.) The next guest, probably isn't going to want to wait until 6 or 7 pm at night because you extended someone's stay to accommodate traffic. Even if you went the other way, would you want to check out of a rental at 8 am?

thanks for the info, as I said I am not in the rental business and I do not know the ins and outs...buuuut, this (above) is not what I am talking about.

I am saying why can't the different agencies get together and determine that they will stagger their check in check out times?

So if 10 of the bigger agencies checked out at 10 and in at 3; 10 more at 11 and in at 4; maybe 10 more at 12 and in at 5...or some version of this...

Don't most of the agencies have their own housekeeping staff? So, they would adjust their hours to accommodate whatever check-out, check-in their company chooses.

Seems like a pilot test of this during a slower week might yield some interesting results...

Is it really a check-in/out timing issue or is it that there are no alternate routes and people cannot get about their daily business at certain times - like when it is check-out time/raining?

IMO a connector road to 98 between Camp Creek and 395 would solve most of the 30-A saturday traffic issues.

As would a 4 lane bridge/highway at 331.

Don't have an easy fix for bypassing the outlet store cluster.

Much easier said than done. Check-in/check-out times are already a constant problem, with guests hiding out at the beach so they can extend their stay a few more hours...

The guests all talk at the pool anyway, so we'd have guests staying with Agency A telling guests staying with Agency B that they get two more hours, and then Agency B's guests... You get the picture.

It's a good idea in theory, but having worked in the industry as long as I did, I can tell you that you'd be sunk from day one trying to put it into practice. :dunno::wave:

I've often wondered why there's not another cut through beyond 395. It would sure alleviate a lot of traffic woes.

well, I will defer to the voices of expereince; but, it does work in other areas; there are many places where the hotels have different check out times. I wonder what their secret is?

And, no one would be getting any more] time--they would just being checked in and out at different times. 10 -4 is the same amount of time as 11-5. Is it not?

Well, I think it really is about no alternate routes, but my point has been that since it's not likely that we can build a road before the summer onslaught, that some interim, alternatives would be a good temporary solution to what is a huge problem and could be a real disaster in a hurricane.

If we put some of these into effect when things aren't too bad; people would be accustomed to them in the event of a hurricane or some other disaster...

it seems worth trying to me, but maybe not....
