I find myself viewing Palin with the same uneasy fascination that I normally reserve for random crazies on the street who talk with lamp posts...The simple fact that any sane human could take her ramblings seriously disturbs me greatly.

Dougiebaby says it perfectly. once again. there is really nothing to add about her so I won't.

but I do want to say that to those who say we are ALL to blame, well, blaming isn't very useful. yes, we are all oil dependent - the whole world is. I've had someone say to me that Florida doesn't want offshore drilling but we drive cars so we aren't environmentalists we just don't want driling in our backyard. hell yeah! if we don't protect our environment, who the hell will? in fact we're seeing that the drilling taking place far away from our shores is about to impact us significantly. we care greatly about the planet, not just our shores. but if we don't take special interest in our shores then they will be no more.

yes, we drive cars. and millions of tourists drive cars to our great state. but most of us car drivers also want and expect and vote for progress in new energy sources. the reduction of fuel dependency. better transportation. where is our high speed rail system? humans have great capacity for progress and advancement (oil use for energy was and is progress by the way, its just that apparently we don't know much about protecting the planet while drilling her, and we don't know much about monitoring our usage).

so, I'm just saying let's not blame. let's support everything we can to go to the next level - reducing fuel use and finding new sources of energy. all while protecting our precious environment. who says we can't drive a car and protect our environment at the same time?

sorry geo for dissing the Palin subject of this thread but I don't listen to a thing she has to say much less respond to it.

Some of us in Sowal have thought "wouldn't it be fantastic, if we had a high speed rail terminal where the new airport is".,.,most of our visitors come from the SE and want to drive to the beach--we have marketed ourselves as a "drive to" destination.

Now, if St Joe had anted up for a high speed terminal--the hub of the SE--with service to all the cities that are home to our regular tourists and worked to improve the infrastructure to and from and at, both the VPS and PFN airports, I think we would have had a much more workable system.

There could have been an auto-train component for those who still wanted to bring their vehicles; and there could have been an effort to support advancement of hybrid rental vehicles at the terminal; there could have been a research/academic incentive to find cleaner fuels for the trains; and lessening our need for jet fuel....and all of us could enjoy the calmer pace of train travel that is so wonderful in other countries in the world...heck, there probably could have been a way to build a high speed train system that would parallel highway 20 from the VPS airport...

I'm not sure why people are trying to make this a polarized issue. There are 3800 oil rigs in the Gulf right now. They are not going away. They are crucial to our energy needs. Period. BUT, and this is a huge BUT, they need to be regulated and SUPERVISED MORE CLOSELY. This seems fairly obvious to me. Maybe, some of the layed-off oil workers can be retrained into a top-notch crew of PREVENTIVE SUPERVISORS. (Sorry I'm yelling so much-must be oil related stress) I do think that oil drilling should be banned off the coast of Florida, but it simply has to continue in TX and LA under adult supervision.

Arkie, the first part was my post. Yzcartoo tried quoting me and responding to me but her formatting got screwed up. Maybe she can edit to avoid confusion?
