Way over the rainbow
I do not know if this has been discussed but is playing out on a few other web sites.

Newspaper Chain’s New Business Plan: Copyright Suits | Threat Level | Wired.com

Apparently a lawyer has decided that a great way to make money would be to go to different web sites and look for content that has been copied from other websites. Such as news articles, blogs, etc.
The lawyer then sues the web site to try to get to settle before going to court.

U.S. Copyright Office - What Does Copyright Protect? (FAQ)

I am not a lawyer and did not sleep at Holiday Inn Express but this could effect this or any other website where people cut and paste articles. Some websites are now going to the No cut and paste just links to original content.

I know that the lawyer is a bad role model for a snake but I think that the possibility of lawsuites should be discussed at least.

It's hard to imagine that copyrighted pubs would object to limited use of their content in a discussion forum. You'd think they would welcome such use.

One website stealing content from another is a different story.
If I set up Ugabuga News.com & steal content from NYT, WSJ, Time Mag, etc., I would expect the big boys to come after me.

Thx for useful link.

Key concept seems to be "legally obtain authorization to republish for commercial and professional use."

Discussion boards cut&pasting would seem to lie outside of this concept & therefore be permitted.

Most websites have a policy that you're only supposed to excerpt a couple of lines of a story and then provide a link to the full content. I'm actually rather surprised that Kurt allows full stories from pretty much anywhere because it seems like it's setting up potential copyright problems if anyone does object.

I'm not sure if the original post was about SoWal.com or just about the general topic for discussion, but I'm surprised that such a thoughtful and excellent long-time poster like yourself doesn't know our clearly stated policy on the matter:

We do not cut and paste articles on SoWal.com - any articles posted on our site are original, or with permission from other sources, which usually includes a link request.

Actually, posters would do us all a favor if they would simply "excerpt a couple of lines of a story and then provide a link to the full content." Long posts are a bummer.

This issue (and basic courtesy) is why you aren't allowed to post entire articles on Sowal - just a couple sentences and a link back to the original source.

It's like someone thought up with the rules for us to follow for a reason. ;-)

Couldn't this be a sticky so that people actually know?
