So, my "which place would you rather live thread got deleted," and I think I think got banned for a rule that was written on a hidden thread two years ago, without an explanation, but I digress.

Before ugabuga informed me that I was a troll, which was a rather ridiculous claim, Bob had an interesting reply to a post I had made.

I had said
Not all conservatives who are against affirmative action are racist; and not all conservatives who are against title nine are sexist.

It has been awhile, but that is basically what I had written.

Bob replied with
..bullshiyit

This was my response.

I, like many conservatives, am against affirmative action based on race; because I believe socioeconomic background, rather than race, is the greatest barrier to a college education today.

So let's see what Obama has to say about affirmative action.

"I think that my daughters should probably be treated by any admissions officer as folks who are pretty advantaged..."

I think that we should take into account white kids who have been disadvantaged and have grown up in poverty and shown themselves to have what it takes to succeed.

What we want to do is make sure that people who've been locked out of opportunity are going to be able to walk through those doors of opportunity in the future."

That is basically the conservative view against affirmative action; and Obama actually agrees with the position.

Does this mean Obama is racist against African-Americans because he is one of few Democrats who currently points out the flaws of race based college admissions?

Edit: To be fair, I should add that the thread that i referred to about posting full articles is a sticky in the business section. It just seems like it should also be a sticky in this section as well, but oh well.

Nope, but asking that question makes one racist.

Is there really a point to this thread other than to start a fight? I don't see a chance of real discussion coming out of any thread that is started in this manner.

So do you think that people from lower income families should get a job before someone more qualified from a wealthy family?

hkem123,

I thought the moderators pulled your post, not because you cut & pasted & quoted another article in its entirety, but because your post was purposely inflammatory, disrespectful of others' points of view, & calculated to pick a fight. When I said it was troll-like or some such, this is what I meant (maybe I don't know the correct definition of "troll.")

As I remember your post it said we liberals & conservatives had been living together & sharing this country for years & had stayed together for the sake of the kids, but it was now time to break up the country & divide up our stuff. You conservatives would take the guns & SUVs & money, etc. & we liberals would take the gays & welfare queens etc.

I know it was supposed to be "funny" in a way, but proposing breaking up the country--in our current political environment--is, if not over the edge, pretty close to the edge.

I'll admit I've not always been as civil as I could be in some discussions on this forum. Sometime a sharp edge in these discussions is "good." It's a matter of degree & judgement.

The moderator should make it clear to you why your post was pulled.

No.
Good point, I was really thinking affirmative action more along the lines of college admissions because government has more control over that than they do of who gets private sector jobs (well....theoretically anyways;-)). Although many private companies, such as the NFL, have instituted their own affirmative action policies; that is really no place for government.

Back to college though.

Two students from Houston are applying to UT-Austin. Those familiar with UT admissions, forget the top 8% rule for the sake of this argument.

Student A is from the upper class neighborhood of Bellaire. He has a 2200 SAT, a 4.0 unweighted from his public suburban high school, and strong extracurriculars.

Student B is from the inner city, has a 4.0 and a 2180 SAT score, and equal extra curricula to Student A. Student A though grew up with a single mother making 10,000 a year, she was an alcoholic. And Student A had to work 30 hours a week during the school year from the 7th grade up while basically raising his two younger siblings.

I think that because of Student B's disadvantages and that he still became a stellar student that shows he is very likely to succeed in college. I mean, imagine how good his stats would be if he had that 30 hours a week back in high school to study rather than work.

That is my idea of how affirmative action should look in college admissions. It should be a look into the background of the student; not just a student checking a race box on a sheet of paper.

Ok, I agree with everything you said on this post.

Just a reminder though, Rick Perry proposed a break up of the union and I don't think he has really clarified his position on that topic, and he seems to be doing pretty well politically right now.

Like many issues our gov't attempts to correct, it was and is abused.
Affirmative Action morphed into racism while it was initially designed to abate racism. We shouldn't confuse equal opportunity with affirmative action, but it gets a little shady. When I first moved to Atlanta, all of the news anchors were black women - two birds with one stone. How many times have you heard, "Hire a black woman and then you aren't racist?" People should be admitted to colleges and hired by employers based upon merit only, not socio-economic background, race or gender. I personally would like to see Affirmative Action abolished because I think it carries a very negative connotation with it today......howver, if it is abolished, who will applaud and who will become a squeaky wheel? And, then you're stuck in ill perceived racism again. Catch 22.
