I think everyone within our borders needs to either be a citizen, be on the path to citizenship, or be a legal alien.

Keep dreaming, I say we do the best with what we have, deport illegals who commit other crimes, and make illegals who can help our economy legal.

Right here!
The lazy Americans want to opress the hard working people that actully do the work. College should be based on your ability not Country of birth.

We're not talking about access to higher education, we're talking about the privilege of in-state tuition most states offer in state schools.

One hundred years ago I'd have been for open, unlimited immigration. These days though we have so many entitlements the influx of low income wage earners would be a massive drain on our federal and state finances. It's time to start acting like european nations, we need to shut down the border and severely restrict immigration into the country. We can't afford to allow anything less.

It's the fault of those entitlements that our federal and state finances are draining. We don't need these programs to be so large. They don't pull people up the economic ladder, only education can do that.

We already educate the best and brightest in the world.

Foreign students (here legally) have been dominating our colleges for decades - in engineering, the foreign born share of doctoral students has been over 50% since the late 1970s, since the late 1980s in economics, and since the mid-1990s in physical sciences.

European and Chinese Universities are trying to improve and compete with us, but we still dominate the planet for higher education. Not only is higher education one of America?s strongest export industries, the fact that so many leaders around the world spent time in the U.S. is a continuing source of ?soft power.?

News: 'American Universities in a Global Market' - Inside Higher Ed

When we were kids, Mama Scooterbug had a friend in the registrar's office save the stamps for us - Africa, Middle East, Asian countries, you name it, they all applied in the hopes of getting a chance to attend one of our great schools.

You're absolutely right. I personally have known multiple Thai scholars that the Thai government pays to have come to America because they are some of the smartest in Thailand.

There is one small problem with this though.

after college....they go back home. I want smart people here who are going to STAY here and not just leave and contribute to their country of origin.

The kids that the DREAM Act would help mostly consider themselves American, and I doubt they are at MIT studying chemical engineering because they plan to graduate and go back to work in Guatemala.

The way I see it, we can either let these very talented students become a part of our economy, and tax base, or we can compete against them.

You decide.

Once we default, maybe we can finally start rolling these programs back. ;-)

Right now many are going back to India, China, etc. but only because THEY CAN GET BETTER JOBS THERE AND SEE MORE OF A FUTURE THERE.

They used to stay here and go to work for US companies, but that is not the most attractive option now - for both economic and immigration reasons.

You're right again. Those countries currently have better workforces than we do here in the U.S.

But here is the question.

If we want to improve our workforce in this country why are we kicking out people with prestigious engineering degrees for something their parents did 16 years earlier?

We have the people to make our economy stronger, but for some reason we are kicking them out.

Why are people with "prestigious engineering degrees" unable to comply with very basic rules?

We don't have the most stringent requirements for citizenship by any means.
