Well we just returned from New Orleans, what a disappointment! People just stopped dead in the street on the sidewalks right in front of us and pee in public!
Also crack dealers driving up and down the street asking if you want drugs! I love this place but what in the world has happened? I didn't feel safe at all. I loved a few live music events the Snug Harbour was A CLASS act not to be missed, but some others were just run down joints where you had to stand.
Am I the only one, or old fashioned, or does anyone else have a bad experience. I am not so sure Louie Armstrong would like what he sees!

Oh well!

This has been the way NOLA has been ever since I first visited with my parents when I was a kid in the 60's. Once you live in NOLA for a few years, you appreciate it, despite its faults. Love the cuisine, love the architecture, love the music, love the arts, love Tulane, just love it.

I'll bet Louis Armstrong peed on the street at times. When you're partying in the French Quarter, sometimes nature calls.

Everytime we head down to SoWal/Destin, we stop in NOLA, sometimes once going down, once coming back. We tend to stay off Bourbon and parts of Canal and have never had a problem. It's definitely a matter of taste but we love it there and can't wait to go back.

I agree......it was the same when I was there in the early 80's and early 90's. Some things never change...but it's being at "the fringe" that is the draw to many.

Bunny,
I was just there in September. Compared to the way it was before Katrina it reminded me of Disneyland. I thought it had been cleaned up pretty well. It wasn't very crowded and mostly reserved couples walking up and down Bourbon. I was looking to score some crack but was disappointed when I couldn't find any........just kidding ;-) I did consider peeing in the street a couple of times!
Seriously, I love the food, music, and the vibes of the people of New Orleans.
Their hearts are large and I think they are some of the warmest people I've ever encountered. Sorry you had a bad experience.

We have been twice recently and as BR said it seems the same as it did in the 70s.

I never felt unsafe but then I live in Memphis, so it's all relevant I guess.

NOLA is what it is, and I love it.

The lack of public restrooms and the abundance of drink do contribute to the problem.

I was born and raised in NOLA and lived there for 30 years. I go back quite often, but stay clear of Bourbon and Canal streets. When I visit the French Quarter, my favorite place is Decatur street and the French Market. I feel priviledged to have grown up in such a unique city.

no wonder those sewer-raised crawfish are known as cajun caviar. A specialty dish in the bistros along Rue de Wee Wee
