Right here!
True about Sandestin but Sandestin is a poor example. You're talking apples and oranges. Sandestin is like a theme park all contained in a little bubble. The planners of that community designed it such that 45MPH would be entirely inappropriate. What's the speed limit there? I think 17MPH. As such- LSV's are legal there and make all the sense in the world.

SD is no different than the stretches of 98 that run through Rosemary, Ally's, Seaside and Watercolor, Grayton, Seagrove, Dune Allen, ..... In these areas speed limits have already dropped. Isn't 30A @ 25mph in at least one part already? I look at 30A and I see a road much like Scenic 98. In time, the speed limit on most of 30A will come down.

The reason I believe you are wrong is because the most rural parts of 30A (which have the posted 45MPH speed limit) have state/protected land on one or both sides of the roadway. Correct me if that isn't true. For fun- let's say all that land is privately owned and will be developed. At that time my argument would certainly change and I would see the need to lower the speed limit. And at that time- LSV's would be legal. Until then- .

True, but I think it's a loss for the area. It's really pretty sad that you can't get around parts of 30A without firing up the gas guzzling Tahoe. The whole area really lends itself toward alternative, community oriented, and more fuel efficient forms of transportation. Anyway, I don't live down there at this point, so I really don't care much one way or the other.

One thing that keeps getting ignored by the pro - LSV and pro-golf cart crowd is that even if we were to lower the speed limit, they still cannot physically go that speed.

15-20 mph is the realistic maximum speed for most LSVs.

It's higher than that, probably 25mph or a little bit more if they're fully charged. Still slower than a car and without the acceleration capability. (I get "stuck" behind them in SD and have to slow down a bit.) Alternatively we could figure out how to make room for them without having them in the main road.

For someone who doesn't care one way or another 30aShopper, you sure are vehemently defending something that doesn't matter. 30a has a unique beauty due to it's protected lands and I hope that never changes. I don't believe it's comparable to the singular resort microcosm that is Sandestin.

I have NEVER driven a gas guzzling Tahoe down 30A.

It isn't a gas guzzler vs. LSV situation. Other options DO exist. Many locals (and some visitors) walk, bike, carpool, drive compact cars, drive hybrids, etc.

Don't have actual statistics, but my guess is that if you compare the vehicles driven by the people who live here full-time and those of visitors you will find a huge difference in vehicle size and gas consumption. (Partly because those vehicles work best for road trips and partly because of lifestyle differences.)

One thing I would like to see is a shuttle/trolley service along 30-A. There were plans to test it out a couple days a week during the high season last summer, but the spill/economic concerns put the kibosh on it.

THAT is much more practical than LSVs as a way to save gas and promote green practices.

A shuttle service would probably help, it's certainly worked up here. But it won't solve the current traffic problems we have on 30A, which are just horrendous.

It's only horrendous during peak times - or when some yahoo drives their golf cart down the road and holds up traffic. ;-)

Shuttle would help with the peak issue.

Looking at 30 A west of Seaside, I don't see LSVs and resort communities in the future. You've got dune lakes, a state park, rolling hills, and established residences already on 30 A. I could picture some old fart tooling around Gulf Place drink in hand on an LSV, but that's pretty much it. By the way, that's not only the image evoked by LSVs, it's the one that the marketing scoundrels strive for. Go figure.

I presume you mean 30A. Assuming so, I agree with you. Rosemary, Alys, Seaside, Watercolor, Grayton, Gulf Place, etc. have low speed limits and are places where it makes a lot of sense to drive around in golf carts. The law allows licensed/registered LSV's in those places.

None of this leads reasonable thinking people to conclude that we should therefore allow LSV's to be driven on rural roads where the speed limit is 45MPH or to lower the speed limits on those rural roads.

Do you have any new material?

You can get around using all kinds of legal gas, electric and human powered modes of transport. Like I said, no need to lower speed limits for golf carts.

Legal on 30A or the path to the side? I don?t believe that?s the case. Here's a simple example: lets say I have a house in Gulf Trace. I or my tenants want to get to Grayton for groceries. Independent of buying a 35K electric car (which, if I'm renting my place out, I'm not going to do for obvious reasons) or walking the distance and huffing groceries back on foot, what are my options for transportation independent of my car or the Tahoe my tenants drove down in?
