I've just returned from the Capitol in Tallahassee and discovered a bill that Representative Marti Coley introduced -- HB1371 "Billboard Regulation."

From what I can understand, the Bill allows exceptions to signs within tourist areas. I still cannot under the implications. It would be tragic if South Walton could be inundated with "tourist-related" billboards. From years past, we are unique in our ban of new billboards and that makes us "special." ??

Oh thank you Marti!!:sarc: You really represent your constituents here along the coast so well! Can we have some oil wells to go with those pretty signs?

One of the many reasons South Walton "feels" different from Destin or Panama City is because no new billboards have been allowed since the early 1990's. As part of the lobbying for that regulation, a citizens' group surveyed the users of all billboards then in place from one end of the county to another along Highway 98. The vast majority were national companies which had very little to do with local commercial establishments.

This bill is simply a "back-door" effort to circumvent the county's (and citizens') wishes and to de-regulate billboards in Walton County. I suspect our own TDC's fingerprints are all over this bill.

We really need to find someone who can win against her. She does not even attempt to represent the people in this area.

That is indeed debatable. I am against the building of billboards in South Walton and will call her office and tell her so, but she represents me quite nicely, thank you. I note that she represents the party opposite of the one of which you are so obviously a member. Could that have anything to do with your interpretation of her "attempt to represent the people in this area". As the saying goes, it is in the eye of the beholder, and no, there will be no convincing you otherwise nor you, me.

and your point is? :dunno:

AndyA, I am not trying to convince you, or anyone else, of anything. You know, AndyA, everything is not always about you.

It is possible that we could find people from YOUR party who would do a hell of a lot better job representing the interests of South Walton than Coley. Nobody but you said that this person would have to be a Democrat. There is a large group of people in South Walton who are ready for representation on a local and state level based on the specific needs of our area- business, environmental, education, taxes- and we really don't care about party affiliation, only that the person representing us in South Walton has the needs of the area ahead of the needs of a political party. Time to evolve Andy.

I beg to differ. It is about me and its time someone around here understood that. I have certain ideals and principles I adhere to and so do many others who agree with my point of view. So please don't tell me its not about me when the results of what you want will affect me and my constuiency.
