One of their favorite foods is long leaf pine seedlings, when they are in that "grass" stage, before the trunk forms. The Pt Washington Forest guys hate them. Too many pigs undermines the forest restoration efforts.

this morning there is a state trooper sitting at that spot; lights flashing, parked on the shoulder, facing East...no other cars, people, or pigs in sight:dunno:

I saw a herd of pigs, 2 big ones and a bunch of little ones crossing hwy 98 near Camp Creek Golf course yesterday at 2:15. They were not the same pigs as those in the pictures above. The ones I saw were all very dark brown with a lighter brown ring around their shoulder and neck area. All of them had the same markings. Cars were pulled over and no police. It was quite the sight.

Wild pig, rattlesnake, softshell turtle, frog legs, rabbit- all taste just like chicken! Thats what my grandparents would tell me. Actually wild pig is a delicacy especially the smaller ones and perfect for the grill with a little JD barbecue sauce. The bigger ones are good for pork chops and sausage. There is nothing wrong with the meat and no more worries than all the stuff that is fed to the domesticated varieties. Wild pig is probably better for you than 99% of anything that is USGA certified. Would be considered "organic" by many. Hunting and trapping is allowed because they are very "prolific" in the bird and bees department. They will destroy a garden in a heartbeat. I can not imagine the damage they could do on a golf course...

Can't believe this is happening in beautiful FL!

I saw this post and wondered what the heck? I was extremely surprised to read that you have wild hogs (feral) in your lovely part of the country! And more amazed at how folks were stopping and taking photos of them as they traveled onward... Feral hogs are hunted and killed year round here in the Ozarks of Missouri, they cause extreme damage to the farmland and forests. If they're allowed to continue roaming freely and not being exterminated the numbers will GROW!!! The photo is a fine example of that... They do carry diseases and can be extremely dangerous too, they will corner you and attack you. They should be trapped and killed to STOP the mating.

I've heard they're not particularly tasty meat, which kind of limits the number of people who hunt them around here. Where I work, we're adjacent to Eglin Reservation, and a few years back we actually had to pay someone to trap them because they were effectively destroying all the landscaping on campus, and we also didn't want someone to get hurt because they got between Mama and her babies.

The big ones, especially the boars, can be gamey. Best way to eat is to trap, castrate the males and "purge" by feeding corn for a couple of weeks. This can take the gaminess out.

But the little ones would taste tender.

Mmmmmm, bacon!
