The last time I looked, there were 50 states in the United States of America. When one state is not only economically sound but creates 38% of the jobs in the United States, their leader must be doing something right. And I also agree that taxpayer monies should not be used for campaign rallies. Uh, you might make sure that message gets passed on to President Obama as well as Rick Perry.

Rick Perry's no more responsible for Texas' good fortune than Bill Clinton was for the 1990s tech boom. They're just two guys who were in the right place at the right time when an industry took off.

Texas still has 10 million unemployed people and a 9% unemployment rate - I don't think Perry has performed an economic miracle.

Most of the recent jobs that have boosted their figures are low paying and IMO are caused more by population growth than Perry's policies.

Agreed - I would say that job growth wouldn't have been much different here whoever was in the governor's mansion. It is TX. We have oil & gas and coastal ports and don’t forget our cheap labor.

Before Perry was at the helm, taxes were already being kept relatively low. He has kept the status quo on fighting regulation at the expense of the environment. He would have to show how he could do more than maintain status quo for the country if he were to be president, because he wouldn’t be walking into such a convenient senerio.

And maybe he can! BUT he can’t take too much credit for it here. He just rode it out so to speak.

What he has/is doing to education and social services are nothing to be proud of imo. And I'm not on the same wavelength with him on LGBT issues or requiring sonograms before abortions or trying to force girls to get vaccinated against a sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer. He was lobbied to do this by the company that made the vaccine. My daughter was around the age that would have had to do this if leveler heads hadn't prevailed. This kind of stuff is overreach.

I think he would be another shoot from the hip, feel it in the gut, pray on it type of president as opposed to gathering consensus from experts and taking a more nuanced approach. This may be fine with some people but not what I would prefer.

edit: This probably needs a new thread.

Personally, I don't take issue with Christians having a prayer rally and excluding other religions voices in the belief that Christianity is the true religion; Islam and other religions believe the same and try to convert others. That is our constitutional right.

What bothers me is who is funding the event, the American Family Association. I don't think the Southern Poverty Law Center hurls the tag "hate group" around if someone sneezes wrong. These people can be vicious in their pursuit of their so called truth. Just recently in New York, they and the Counsel for Marriage harassed us residents with automated phone calls day and night polling the question of whether we agreed that marriage should only be between a man and woman. If you said no, they called back and again and again, I believe so it was so someone would change their vote to see if the calls would stop. How Christian is harassment?

"Religion" is responsible for the death of many humans in war after war in the history of mankind. "Religion" is also responsible for guiding or correcting many humans toward a more peaceful existence with others. How can there be both good and bad in "religion"? The answer to that question is in the character of human nature. Human nature desires power over others in society. Human nature desires communities of similiar thinking people. Human nature is intolerant of others outside their own community. Human nature is defensive and takes extreme positions. Human nature is arrogant and desires to be superior over others. Human nature is also compassionate and desires to help others. I believe that human nature is contradictory! Both good and bad, both intolerant and compassionate both arrogant and passive. When we take the extreme position on ANY subject it will evoke emotion from others. We can not just live and let live. We take ourselves too seriously. Politicians have a double dose of this. In my opinion politicians should politic on the "issues". When a politician uses a religious platform I believe it is for votes. If that is not true then why have these types of public gatherings.

Also in my opinion "religion" should be private matter. Why did Americans wipe out an entire native american culture? Because we wanted the land that they live on and then justified it in the name of GOD. I believe we need to be more tolerant of others and allow them to believe what they want to believe. There will always be fanatics that take religion or whatever to the extreme. All we can do is try to be a little more tolerate of others each day, however when politicians mix politics with religion-you better run for the hills...
