Other than Tom Thumb and Publix, we don't patronize chain establishments on 30A. Why? The special thing about 30A for us when we first built here was the absence of chain establishments. We can get that at home or drive to Destin or PC for that.

Let's keep 30A special, not just an extension of Destin and PCB. Let's support the local businesses!

Since you are not boycotting Tom Thumb and Publix, what's the point? The only other chain I can think of is Subway (very small sign) and the totally obnoxious Snappy Turtles. These kind of stores are a threat to what we want Seagrove to remain. What we really don't need is the proliferation of chain stores and the accompanying homogeneous signage that accompanies them.

And the deal with a Subway is that it's a franchise situation where the owners can be local small businessmen who just happened to decide a franchise was the best way of starting their business.

We go to the local credit union.

I was just wondering about this the other day. To date, what has kept most of the chains away from 30A? Is it simply that it hasn't had the population to support them like PCB and Destin? If so, that seems to be changing. The Snappy Turtles sprouting up every few blocks is not a good sign.

For some reason I thought there was some kind of ordinance against chains on 30A -- like the 50 foot building limitation -- but it appears that's not true. But then if there are no ordinances, what is it that will keep 30A unique and not just a suburb of Destin?

Have you ever taken a look at the Walton County Land Development Code? There are more protections for Highway 98 in codes and ordinance than there are for scenic 30A. It's very sobering when you think about what's likely to follow on in terms of development.

Shopping at local stores is always a good idea.

Boycotting chians like Walmart, Dollar General, and Starbucks does very little, but spending at small local stores does a lot!

Stores are not allowed to have drive-thrus (except banks) so McD's etc. probably are not interested in 30a. I heard there was one grandfathered in but don't know where.
