UPDATE: Two men have died after being pulled from the water on April 8th in Miramar Beach. One is a 55-year-old from Dunwoody, Georgia. The other is a 21-year-old from Gray, Louisiana.

During these water rescues, the flags stood at single red. That still indicates the water as an incredible threat to human life with high surf and strong rip currents. Know that just because we cannot keep you out of the Gulf during single red, does not mean you should be in it. Mother nature can be very unforgiving.

This is a difficult post for us. We know there are families still grieving. But, we're begging visitors to please continue to educate themselves regarding the flag system. We will continue to do our part.

Personally never really understood the single red. It might be time to go from yellow directly to double red or make single red full stop like a traffic light.

Darwinism at work. I've really lost sympathy for these idiots.

I almost drowned around 10 years ago. Saw a kid that floated too far out, tried to help, and unfortunately was too out of shape to be of much help.

Nonetheless - You are a wonderful caring human being!

Many times someone's hero complex sends them out to add to the carnage. It doesn't make you a hero either it makes you an idiot that also puts someone else's life in danger.

When people are drowning they panic. That is understandable. When people on the beach see someone in the water in trouble they often panic also. Most people want to help that doesn't make them an idiot or someone with a complex.

If you've been trained, which very few have, you know that you need a flotation device when you approach someone who is panicked in the water. If you don't have one then they will likely grab you desperately and may drown you both.

If you are not an extremely strong swimmer with training and equipment you may not survive an attempt to help someone. Call 911 and remain calm.
