Eighty citations with the accompanying $500 fines have been issued to people caught in recent weeks on Walton County beaches violating double-red flag warnings and entering dangerous surf in the Gulf of Mexico. The $500 fine for entering the water when double-red flags are flying has been in place since February, when county commissioners enacted a number of changes to the county's beach activities ordinance.

Where does the $40,000 go?

What's the record on consecutive days with double red flags?
There was a time when double red flags weren't even a thing and Grayton Beach didn't have lifeguards. I miss those days. What happened?

Fines like those go to the states general fund. It's not kept locally to prevent misuse.
