Honestly, in general I don't see the charm and friendliness as anything other than superficial, and the grit is definitely not there as you can see by the widespread inability to do what is necessary to beat the pandemic. Their superficiality masks a deep rooted nastiness, pettiness, and prejudice. I said in general because I do meet plenty of southerners who meet your criteria, but it's probably only about 20%. I've met very few people from other parts of the country who are jealous of the lifestyle. I learned to really like it, because those 20%, who usual lean slightly left, are in fact some of the coolest people I've ever known.
It is all about perspective. If you believe that 80% of all Southern born and raised people are deep rooted nasty people then your perspective is biased. If you believe that 80% of the cause of not beating this pandemic is from Southern born and raised people then you are biased. If you believe that Southern grit is an undeserved compliment then you were not born and raised in the South. Don't sweat it...we all have biased perspectives :)

I've lived in northwest Florida for 60 years and I still dislike sweet tea with a passion. My observation is that coastal citizens, in Florida, as well as other states, are normally not "home-grown", but rather transplants from a rather large array of different places, and different backgrounds.
I am so sorry...that you don't like sweet tea. I guess that proves that there are exceptions to every general rule or classifications of human beings :)

Northern Florida both coasts are pretty southern. But that's about it. At least in my experience.
Have you ever been to some of those little towns around Lake Okeechobee and central Florida? I played high school football against some of them and I can assure you they were Southern to the bone. I have relatives who I use to visit in Tampa 50 years ago and it was very southern back then. I think we spend a lot of time grouping people into categories which is okay as long as we are respectful. Would you agree?

What proof do you have that my views aren't completely objective? I've lived here for about 40 years, and 20 years elsewhere. I could be in a much better position to make an honest assessment than most. Who's to say your opinion isnt based on deep indoctrination and tribalism? When in your life have you been exposed to the thoroughly disengenuous and fake hospitality that southerners show to newcomers? You'd have to be retarded not to be able to see through that s**t.:rotfl:Its a f****ng joke! I learned that decades ago, and decades ago I learned to exclude these reptiles from my life and be very, very particular about who I associate with.

Hmm I think you have crossed the line between bias and prejudice and headed toward a social disorder :)

BTW I happen to have a lot of exposure to people from all over this country. We are way more alike than not regardless of what geographical region human beings are from. Some people are cultural and some are libertarian like only needing/wanting things for self indulgence. Culture is rich and rewarding in so many ways that I can't explain without using a lot of words. There are exceptions of course. Human beings are not good at being objective which is rather normal. However it is not normal to classify human beings as reptiles. Whatever caused your issues with southern people is not anyone's problem but yours. I have my own problems with some people that I am working on :)

Lived in Central Florida for several years. We visit family in St Pete as well as Miami. As an Alabama girl I never really felt I was in the south. Loved it anyway. Definitely some southern influences here and there.

I'm not grouping people at all. Just speaking about my own life experiences. And they were all very positive.. Just not the southern culture I'm used to. When living or visiting there I feel like I am not in the south. That isn't a bad thing. Just a personal feeling. And I prefer unsweet tea. We are all a little different.

Our visits all along the panhandle from Pensacola to Apalachicola are very southern in my book... where I feel most at home. And one of my favorite places ever is Fernandina Beach on the east coast very near Georgia. As Southern as it gets.

I think we all have a tendency to group people into categories or classifications. I think we all have biases. We just need to be aware of it and not judge others too harshly just because we don't agree or like some things about a different way of life. There is no real logic in our country being so divided. We can blame the South, media, politics, fear, ignorance etc and it may be true but it will not help us save our democracy. We must find ways to connect with each other and it is getting harder to do that with social media, 24 hour media and partisan politics. You are from the South like myself and there is a lot of good along with the not so good. You focus on the good which is beautiful. It is something I am trying to do myself.

I'm not getting into any of that negativity in this lighthearted thread. I love Florida. Florida man. Southern and Northern influences all over the state. Lots of diverse backgrounds and cultures the further south you go. And the further south you go the less southern you'll find. Always and that makes this state so interesting! These are not bad things at all.

I'm very happy to be from the south although I'm not a confederate flag waving kind of gal.. I come from a big Italian family with lots of love and good food. Our identify is not tied to anything confederate probably because my family immigrated from Italy in the early 1900s.. Poor Italian farmers in Birmingham with their own obstacles, lots of hard work, and family/community to help succeed. We don't do rebel but to each their own.

I'm aware of the problems we have here in the South but so does every part of the country. I can focus on the good stuff because it's a lot of GOOD stuff. I can also appreciate people from all over the country and world at the same time. Celebrating diverse cultures as well as our shared humanity.
