New Waste Management trash carts are rolling out in Walton County. Every household will receive a 95-gallon cart, which holds 10 standard trash bags.

Prefer a smaller size? You can swap for free—choose a 65-gallon (six standard trash bags) or 35-gallon (three standard trash bags).

Any swap after the free swap will incur a $30 fee. Residents will have one month from delivery of the new trash cart to request the swap to a different size trash cart for free. To switch, call WM at (850) 389-6121 or visit Trash & Recycling Pickup in Walton County, FL | WM

Important Pickup Reminders: Only the trash inside your cart will be collected—no loose bags or extra items outside. Place the cart within three feet of the road with space around it for the mechanical arm to grab the trash cart.

Have questions? Call WM at (850) 389-6121 or visit Trash & Recycling Pickup in Walton County, FL | WM

So nice that the county gave us a heads up. I have 2 relatively new 65 gal cans that I purchased from Franks not long ago and they weren't cheap. I also replaced 2 cans at my rental.
What does one do with 4 good trash cans? Hmmmm I guess we can put yard waste in them for Thursday pick up.

Q: Can I use my own trash cart for curbside collection?

A: Only County-provided gray carts with the County emblem or, if you have a WM green cart, it will also be collected. Other carts will not be serviced. The collection of two carts will be free of charge; any additional collections will need to be paid for by subscription through WM.

Q: What should I do with my old trash carts that are no longer serviced?

A: You may bring them to one of our Old Cart Drop-off Locations. The locations are listed below. Also, consider keeping your old cart to use for yard waste collection.

North Walton – County Landfill - 1118 Institution Road, DeFuniak Springs, FL 32433

Freeport – Behind Freeport Annex – Entrance off of Blue Ridge Parkway

South Walton – Blue Mountain Beach – 970 S Co Hwy 83, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459

Q: How do I get a County-provided trash cart?

A: Each legal residence will automatically receive one County-provided cart. If you have not received your cart, please contact WM at (850) 389-6121.

Q: How do I obtain additional carts or exchange for a smaller cart?

A: Additional carts can be purchased directly from WM for $130 each cart. Contact WM at (850) 389-6121. The collection of two carts will be free of charge; any additional collections will need to be paid for by subscription through WM. You may also contact WM if you would like to exchange your cart for a smaller cart. You may do this free of charge between May 1st through May 31st. Any time out of that a charge will be incurred for an exchange.

Q: Can I place additional trash bags outside of my cart for collection?

A: No. Trash placed outside of the designated carts will not be collected. All waste must fit inside your approved cart(s).

Q: Why can't I use other carts or leave trash bags beside the carts anymore?

A: WM now utilizes Automated Side Load (ASL) technology, which requires standardized carts for automated collection. Only designated carts will be serviced by ASL trucks.

Q: What is Automated Side Load (ASL) technology?

A: Automated Side Load (ASL) technology employs a mechanical lifting arm allowing waste collection truck drivers to lift and empty standardized carts, improving safety, efficiency, and cleanliness.

Q: Why is WM switching to ASL technology?

A: ASL technology provides a safer, more efficient, and cleaner method of trash collection. It reduces worker injuries, improves collection efficiency, and promotes a cleaner community.

Q: Can I use bear-resistant carts with the new ASL system?

A: We recommend consulting with WM prior to using any bear-resistant carts. Bear-resistant carts will need to be compatible with the ASL collection system. These carts typically feature special latches that automatically release during ASL collection. If your bear-resistant cart is not ASL compatible, latches must be unlocked prior to collection.

Q: What is the website and number for WM?

A: You may contact WM at (850) 389-6121 or visit the following link: Trash & Recycling Pickup in Walton County, FL | WM
