Anyone see the American Idol auditions last night from Minnesota. These auditions are hilarious. Saw a few hopefuls last night but a lot of embarrassing auditions also. Tonight they are going to be in Seattle. Simon claims Seattle had the worst auditions of all the cities. Memphis will be on next week. :clap_1:

I caught a news story on "Idol" last night- about it being such a mean show-and I agree that it has become such a cruel circus. What is the point in having such obviously untalented people be on the show, other than to point fingers and laugh at them? I guess you could argue that it is their 3 seconds of fame, but I still don't see the point when I am sure there were plenty of people with real talent that could have been in their place, and actually competing, instead of being the butt of the judges' jokes. I think the worst part is being made fun of by people like those judges! It's like Mermaid said of the family she knows, if you don't have an interesting "story" then you're not chosen to audition. I enjoy watching the true talent and even some of the people that are horrible are interesting, but the "special needs" adults, I can't accept that as entertainment. It's gone too far. It makes a mockery of those with true talent.
I have never been an Idol fan for this reason- it is just too ugly at the beginning of every season.
Sorry for my rant- back to regularly scheduled Idol programming.

Exactly. I bet there are lots of people out there with incredible talent that auditioned and were passed over for the ones that will make everyone laugh. I don't want an "intersting" life story- I want to hear some people that can really sing and have worked hard for a break.
An overhaul of this show is needed- real and credible judges (with real talent and class themselves) and talented and deserving singers. The nasty-meant-to-be-funny putdowns of the "targets" needs to stop.

I watched the first half hour and was so put off that I started to iron shirts and pants and didn't think I missed anything. I didn't even bother watching the second show.
I'd also like to see some kids who have worked hard for a break. I'm a little bored with these talentless brats who go into hysterics when they're not chosen. What's with this sense of entitlement? I don't understand why the screetchers think that just because they show up, they should automatically be kow-towed to and sent to Hollywood. It's like they're saying "You owe me." Sorry, no, we don't.

So, do you think this is backfiring or causing more people to watch? How many more audition shows are there? I will wait to watch again when the real show starts.

Well I have watched it all up to this point. However, the auditions really make me nuts. My opinion is this. Remember William Hung? He was awful, but he went on to make $$$ based on his audition. I think these folks are trying to do the same thing. IMHO.
Now, I know Memphis is next week. B'ham is in there somewhere but not sure when. I will have to do some checking up on it.

I don't know about the ratings, but I am sure they are high.
Bdarg hates karaoke. Refuses to go, always has. He says that it makes him feel uncomfortable- people going onstage and getting laughed at and jeered. Now I know what he means- that uncomfortable feeling does not make for fun TV for me. I won't even watch when the real show starts since there has yet to be anyone that I can listen to without rolling my eyes or cringing!
(OK- going to my bunker now to shield myself from the arrows- I am sure my blasphemous Idol views are not popular!!)

No arrows from me...even though I'm a fan. You, cheering, jr,mermy and miss kitty are all right. They do seem to take it to a new level of nastiness each year. But, I think all those early contestants know exactly what they're getting into when they sign up...just a thought. And yes, you are absolutely right in that it's all for ratings..just a thought.

You don't need to hide, silly, everyone is thinking the same. We're ALL waiting for the real singing to begin.

What would the world be like if all liked/disliked the same things jdarg. It would be pretty boring to me. So, no arrows from me girlfriend. I certainly understand your feelings!!!!

I bet after all the national flap about the cruelty, there's a lot of furious editing going on before the next show (hopefully).

No arrows from me either! I LOVE the show but I never really like the auditions as much as when the real singing starts. I know many people who only watch it now and stop when it gets serious. It's totally for ratings at the beginning. I do feel sorry for some of these people but like someone said, they should know what they're getting into. Putting them through to the next rounds just so they can be on tv is boosting some of their self confidence- they start thinking--hey maybe I am really good if I've made it this far! Simon has taken it to a new level of mean and I don't like to see it.
Jenay---have you ever listened to Kelly Clarkson?
She's my favorite idol winner. Meow

I don't think there will be any editing either. That is why American Idol is atop the ratings many weeks because of Simon's comments. That and people enjoy the laughs they get from watching people that can't carry a tune.

It would be fine if being terrible singers was the only thing wrong with these people. They were put on the show because they are freakish and unfortunate in looks and demeanor, and the goal is for people to watch and laugh at them and give the judges some "material" for their stupid comments. I will maybe tune in at the end when it gets "serious"

To be honest with you jdarg, alot of these people who are on there are convinced to audition by people claiming to be their friends, and these people tell alot of these people they can sing and to go for it, knowing they cannot carry a tune and are going to be the laughing stock. I am sure that goes on. It starts getting serious when it is down to I believe 24. I have watched Idol every season.

Jdarg - Your comments about Idol making fun of people remind me of my daughter's thoughts on "America's Funniest Videos". She wonders why people find it funny when others get hurt. She doesn't get the humor of laughing at another's misery.
As for Simon, he is rude, but Randy is just disrespectful. Simons's comments are honest even though not well said. Randy just laughs and puts the contestant down with body language. Both could lighten up a bit.

The Idol people don't have to put these poor people on the show. It is amazing how many people have fame confused with notoriety, and the producers have found how easy it is to hook these poor chumps and promise them fame, like William Hung. He was the first and last to profit on this show from being a fool. But the blame still falls with the producers.

Thoughts on American Idol tonight from Memphis. Not as bad as auditions in Seattle or Minnesota, but still lacking. But of course, out of the 22 that made it, we did not get to see them all, which sucked. The guy from Bryant, Arkansas with the long hair surprised me. I thought the first guy that sang from Arkansas had a good voice, but they said he was over the top. I didn't feel he sang any more over the top than the guy from Texas though. The blond headed girl from Memphis was good, thought the black girl from Memphis with the short red hair was not bad, but they didn't feel she was good enough to compete in this competition. And the guy from Texas with the goatee whose father was a singer and dancer with a song called Treat Me Right I believe, he was good. The woman from Brentwood, TN who is a backup singer was fantastic. Really good.

I liked the Texas guy, the blonde and the back up singer. I thought the judges were less vicious tonight--or maybe it was edited???
New York should be interesting.

Yeah, I am wondering about New York. This town just couldn't have auditions without someone doing Elvis. I like Elvis but all the clips of people doing Burning Love I could do without. I do think they were less vicious tonight. Maybe some of it was edited.

I really think they've intentionally toned the meaness down. Some of the..er, "contestants" still were just plain insane, but I thought all and all, tonight, the judges were kinder. Even Simon. There were a couple of really good singers and they let through a couple that I didn't think would make it. So...maybe a "kinder, gentler AI"??

I just spoke with a co-worker whose daughter tried out in Memphis this year. The daughter had to sign a paper stating it was okay for the show to make fun of her. Since she was underage, the mom had to sign as well. She said her daughter was okay with that policy.

Hmm. So I guess she didn't make it to Hollywood? Did they show her on tv?
