Suggestions for surprise b'day party

Ok, I need the help of some of the gulls on here. My sister-in-law just called me and is planning a birthday party for my mom who will be 80 next Sunday. She does not know about the party but knows my SIL and her two daughters are coming. She already is having a DVD made of family pictures that will be shown continuously throughout the party. My sister-in-law was asking what she could get her for her birthday besides the DVD she is having done. I could not help her there as I will have a difficult enough time thinking of something for her myself. But she wants party suggestions also, as to what to serve. My aunt is making a pound cake but I do not really care for her pound cake and there will be frozen yogurt. She has mentioned a vegetable tray and fruit tray. But I think there should be some other kind of cake. And what about a birthday banner? I do not know how she thinks this will be pulled off with her right in the apartment. There may be 10 to 12 people. Will only be a small party. She is going to be calling me back later in the week. If anyone can come up with some good suggestions within the next day or two for me I would appreciate it. I am sure my SIL is not happy with me as I was of no help to her. I have not even been told of who will be coming, my aunt told me I was included in the decision making but I have not even been given a partial idea of who will be there other than my mom and dad and me and my aunt and my SIL and her two daughters and another aunt and uncle, and my mom's favorite nephew. Sorry I am so long winded but help!

How about a bbq and watermelon? 😀
Maybe a triple decker or sheet cake with lots of pretty frosting
After all your mom will only turn 80 once! How about a money tree so she can get something really nice.

Stripper is not a good idea. Just keep it simple. Decorate the pound cake like a birthday cake, provide coffee (older people are cold even in the summertime), iced tea, and soft drinks. Invite the family and the neighbors with whom she is friends.

Now I would like that myself but I don't think the other elderly people that will be there would care for it, like my dad and aunt and another aunt and uncle, all in their 70's and up. And my 14 and 10 year old nieces do not need to see something like that. :nono1:

Thanks for more suggestions Beach Runner. I guess party hats would be too much of a baby thing for an 80 year old but I like the banner idea, what do you think???

Get her a stripper

 My grandfather will be 100 on Halloween. I think he would have been really cool with a stripper that looked like Julia Roberts when he was 80.

I will take my digital camera and get pics and will hit party city and get a birthday banner. They have a really nice apartment. It has more square footage than our house. And of course, nice furniture to go with it.

This is too wild...we're trying to plan "something" for my Dad's 80th in August and so I've been asking folks for suggestions also! A few ideas I have received:

1. 80 "gifts"... could include lots of little delights.... anything from back rubs, a housecleaning, a joke of the week, a mani/pedi might count for "20" gifts if you count by the digits!
2. The "what was happening in the world" the year they were born (could encompass each of 8 decades)....
3. A CD complilation of her favorite songs from "their day"... this was a HUGE hit with my parent's contemporaries @ their 50th Anniversary (and very fun & educational for me to research & put together.
4. 80 personal notes or memories "you are special to me because" (since a small # of guests @ her party) .... from family members, friends, classmates, coworkers, students...
5. Pictures & memories of "childhood / old times" are often well received...has your Mother's hometown ever published a pictoral history book that you could get a copy of (perhaps thru the town newspaper)?
6. Eights & Otts theme....Odds-n-Eights...
7. Go childlike...8 YEARS Old
8. What would a birthday celebration in 1927 have included? Handcranked ice cream, taffy pullings, picnics...????

Here's hoping you get at least 80 great ideas!!!

Lady, you could have everyone talk about their favorite memory of your mom. People always do this at funerals, but I always thought it would be nice at birthdays too so the person could actually hear them. They could tell their favorite story about her and invaribly, other funn stories would come up.OR Have your mom tell her favorite memories of the people attending the party. You could also get one of those cakes with the real picture of the person on it--only use a pic of your mom as a child. Give her a corsage (elderly people really like corsages) of her favorite flowers. Invite a surprise guest she might not expect and hasn't seen in years. Lemme think some more...

Great ideas Dune-AHH and DD. I am going to print this off so I can have it to refer to when SIL calls me back later in the week. 😀

 My grandfather loved this at 80, but most importantly, he is just happy when everyone is together.
