Suggestions for surprise b'day party

Ok, I need the help of some of the gulls on here. My sister-in-law just called me and is planning a birthday party for my mom who will be 80 next Sunday. She does not know about the party but knows my SIL and her two daughters are coming. She already is having a DVD made of family pictures that will be shown continuously throughout the party. My sister-in-law was asking what she could get her for her birthday besides the DVD she is having done. I could not help her there as I will have a difficult enough time thinking of something for her myself. But she wants party suggestions also, as to what to serve. My aunt is making a pound cake but I do not really care for her pound cake and there will be frozen yogurt. She has mentioned a vegetable tray and fruit tray. But I think there should be some other kind of cake. And what about a birthday banner? I do not know how she thinks this will be pulled off with her right in the apartment. There may be 10 to 12 people. Will only be a small party. She is going to be calling me back later in the week. If anyone can come up with some good suggestions within the next day or two for me I would appreciate it. I am sure my SIL is not happy with me as I was of no help to her. I have not even been told of who will be coming, my aunt told me I was included in the decision making but I have not even been given a partial idea of who will be there other than my mom and dad and me and my aunt and my SIL and her two daughters and another aunt and uncle, and my mom's favorite nephew. Sorry I am so long winded but help!

that sounds nice lady

Yeah, if anyone needs some stress relief it is her. My sister-in-law is planning on having some note cards for everyone to write their favorite memories on and present them to her and I emailed her a picture of my mom and dad on their wedding day which she said she wished she had but didn't. I told her I had one. She has a friend helping her with her project she is putting together. One person I have invited that she is not aware of is her nephew Don. She knows who all is going to be here and knows my sister in law and nieces are coming for her birthday but she knows nothing about any party.

OK, I was looking on the internet for day spas in Memphis and found Gould's Day Spa and they offer a one hour stress reducing facial for $75.00

That sounds nice lady. I have noticed though that most seniors like to have their hair styled.
For some reason if I ever reach 80, I don't think I will care much about my wrinkles and if I have any hair left, I want it put in a few rollers.

Elderly women really like to feel pretty. Think about it. As a woman of any age, there is so much pressure to look good for your self worth. If you get to the point that there's no chance of looking good (relative to your age, of course), women are indoctrinated to think that they are worthless. That's why any positive compliment about appearance cheers up my Mother who has no clue what she ate for breakfast on any give day. So sad.

Well, my mom gets her hair done every Thursday. So that leaves me having to find another thing to do. And she likes where she goes Some of the things my Sister in Law is planning are some of the suggestions given on here. She asked if I knew a favorite song of hers but I don't really know what she listens to. Didn't get to talk to my sister-in-law last night but for a second, her youngest daughter supposedly broke some of her fingers catching football. I did the same thing when I was young. How ironic.

It sounds like anything that pampers or destresses your mom will be great! I was trying to think of other spa suggestions and the only other thing I thought of was a manicure or pedicure. I didn't know if a massage would be too rough/uncomfortable for her.

My son and daughter-in-law suggested a pinata. I can see a 80 year old woman swinging at and breaking a pinata. My daughter in law said my father could use his cane or let my mom use his cane to break it. I think she is a little old to handle that. But I get a very funny visual of her trying to break a pinata or of my father using his cane to swing at and break the pinata for her.

this sounds like a dangerous situation - i see broken hips in the future if you're not careful ;-) i'm with you lady, sounds a bit much to me... i wouldn't turn my mom loose on a pinata, and she just turned 66

We always had homemade pinatas (painted paper mache over giant ballons) at our birthday parties when we were little - great fun, but often had to be taken down or beaten by dad to actually break it because we put so many layers of mache on!

Even if it was too much for her to personally hit, would be fun for other guests and for her to watch - especially if you blindfold them and spin them around! Let her do the first gentle whack or "dub" the pinata to open the festivities if she can't hit it herself.

Word of caution w/ pinatas - avoid hard candy (becomes a missile) or anything in a packet (like mini skittles or m&ms) that will break open upon hitting the ground.

I hate pinatas. I had a "Kid Themed" 40th Birthday pool party for someone once and had thought a pinata would be a fun idea....NOT!!
We literally had to beat the everlivin' crap out of that thing with a baseball bat to finally get it to bust....and then...
IT and IT'S CRUDDY LITTLE STUFFING rocketed everywhere...allover the patio ... in the pool ... on top of the ceiling fans, in the light fixtures...for days: pinata guts everywhere ....:pissed:

I give up on what to buy her. I have to get her a gift of some sort Saturday. My sister-in-law discussed the spa thing and she could get that facial for $75.00 and a manicure for around $20.00 but my mom's sister didn't think she would like that. She didn't think it sounded like a great idea at all. I thought it sounded like a good idea. My sister-in-law is taking her out to eat for lunch Saturday and taking her shopping while the girls stay with dad and she has asked me to go. Maybe I can just look around Saturday and try to find her something. It's this kind of stuff that drives me crazy. What two people think is a good idea another doesn't. :idontno:

Did your Aunt have a good reason for thinking your Mom wouldn't like the spa thing...like she's heard yr Mom SAY she doesn't like spa things?

So...if you can't find something perfect than just go with:
Nothing (except a nice card). As someone here said earlier...mostly folks just like having their loved ones around the very best.

If they don't think she'd like the spa, could you talk to your mom's usual salon and see if THEY have any suggestions on ways to pamper her? Perhaps she would be more comfortable with her usual staff & environment? You could do a gift certificate for her at her regular place.

I find it hard to believe anyone wouldn't like pampering - could see it being a comfort issue w/ a massage, but not a facial, manicure etc.

What about a gift of a family photo session/nice frame? Or a reprint/nice frame of old photos of your parents?

Actually I do have a friend you hates facials...says they make her claustrophobic & irritate her skin. I can't imagine, since I think facials are one of the finest things in life!

She had no reason for saying that. I'm sure that has never been discussed between my mom and aunt ever. She just thinks she would just want a plain simple birthday. Well she will still have that but this was supposed to be a gift thing from myself and my sister-in-law Pam. And one of us could take her. And Pam has had a CD put together of a bunch of old pictures of mom and her sisters, pictures of my brother and I when growing up, old pictures of mom's parents, pics of the grandkids, etc that will be shown throughout her party. It is for her to keep. So that covers that. I contributed about 30 pictures. I have seen some of the pictures of Mom and her sisters when younger, I love them. They are so cool.

It went fine. And I of course forgot my digital camera, would have had to leave it in the car while in church. The only one who took pictures was my 10 year old niece, and she didn't take them of everyone. I'd have to tie notes to me to remember things. The CD with the pictures was great. Mom loved it, she has watched it over and over. There were 12 people there. We had cake, ice cream, a veggie tray with dip and a fruit tray with dip. I had hung a celebrate banner on the china cabinet behind the dining room table. Mom got roses from my sister-in-law's parents. I got mom 3 pair of beautiful earrings as I inquired directly with my mom about the spa treatment idea and she said that was not her. But we had a great time. And she said it was the best birthday ever. 😀
