I have now identified one of the BIGGEST problems in this country. Solving it would be relatively simple and have amazing repercussions that would make EVERYONE'S life better in innumerable ways! Airline travel would be more enjoyable, there would be fewer lawsuits, race relations would improve, there would be fewer traffic accidents, you would save & earn more money, other countries would view Americans more favorably, and life in general would be a more pleasant experience. Have you guessed what it is yet?
MANNERS! Before you laugh and dismiss this idea, think of how much easier your day yesterday would have been if even one rude person had instead been nice and polite to you.
I had this epiphany one night at a poker game (quick manners tip, anytime you start with "I don't mean to be an arsehole, but...." you are not only being one, it is about something stupid). Bars are excellent places to see instant repercussions for polite vs. rude behavior. I will get better service by smiling, being patient, and saying please and thank you then the rude guy waving the $20 bill. I also get discounts, reserved seats, free food & drinks, and my requests played by the band. As I sat there watching my own personal reality show (great reception, always on, no commercials, and better then anything scripted), I began to think of all the problems good manners would solve.
So often people feel they need to be rude to get what they want (statistically, the best way is to remain calm & polite, but insistent) and forget how much a little thing can matter. "Please" really is "the magic word", a smile is contagious, and a simple "thank you" or greeting can improve someone's day. A fun experiment is to walk by a line of people and smile at them - you can actually see the change in mood occur.
Now I'm sure you are thinking this sounds like a good idea, but there is no way it could have the major effects I mentioned at the beginning of this post. Here's a couple examples:
Airline travel - planes have become the Greyhounds of the sky, a far cry from when women in white gloves and men in dapper suits made travel glamorous. Flight attendants are overworked and deal w/ cranky & rude people all day (they are really there for your safety and just serve beverages in their down time), kids are kicking your seat and screaming the entire flight, and everyone is busy w/ their cell phone, ipod, or laptop. Overbooked and canceled flights and lost luggage just add to the fun. It is amazing how much of a difference a happy and polite employee, seatmate, or fellow passenger can make. Everyone is so focused on going from Point A to Point B that they miss everything in between. My father comments that he never sees anyone smiling in an airport.
Making a funny face or smiling at a fussy or upset kid will not only improve your flight, but everyone's on the plane. Patiently waiting a minute or two for someone to sit or rise while holding a sleeping kid can mean the difference between a quiet flight and an eardrum assault. I once got upgraded to first class by a fellow PASSENGER because I was willing to switch seats so their tired daughter had room to sleep. Flight attendants have specially made a pot of decaf coffee for me because I didn't want to be a bother when it wasn't an option, they have opened up "already departing" flights for me, and a deadheading pilot talked to the gate agent on an overbooked flight to make sure I got a seat just because I made conversation while politely waiting. Baggage handlers have given me "private numbers" so I can call directly to check on luggage instead of using the automated system, strangers have saved me a seat on hotel shuttles while the pushy person had to wait, and you never saw a happier delayed holiday flight than the one where they did the entire preflight safety lecture based on "twas the night before xmas".
Lawsuits - Only a total arsehole sues someone who is nice and apologetic, so the jury, karma and court of public opinion will take care of them. Think of how often disagreements escalate because someone is rude. Nothing diffuses anger like an apology and politeness. Lawsuits cost everyone money, regardless of who wins.
Ethnic/Race relations - as soon as you smile and say hello, you break down barriers and build bridges. During WWII, they had to move soldiers from the front lines because after playing football during a ceasefire they wouldn't shoot each other. One of the few intelligent statements I have heard about war is that "it will stop when the two sides realize they love their children more than they hate each other". Focus on the positive instead of the negative and only take offense when people MEAN to be offensive.
Traffic Accidents - be patient and follow the rules of the road and there will be no road rage, no fighting over spaces, peaceful merging........
$$$$ - I call them smile discounts - every person who sells you something has the power to save you money. Almost every store or restaurant has discretionary discounts or freebies they don't advertise. From standard % discounts to free samples of products to coupons, these add up! Happy customers & shoppers not only spend more money, they leave bigger tips and give you repeat business. Polite unsatisfied customers receive upgrades, freebies to apologize for the trouble, returns or exchanges on items that are supposedly nonrefundable or returnable, you name it.
International relations - You would be amazed what you miss when you don't learn the language and are an "ugly rude american". The guy at the front desk usually has a relative w/ a great restaurant or a store where you'll get a discount, there are usually available rooms if you are polite, but unhappy about your accomodations, and just learning "hello, thank you, please, I'm sorry" in a foreign language, combined with a smile will get you further than rude fluency. Think of how annoyed you would be if someone came to your home and expected you to speak their language fluently. Now imagine they tried to learn several phrases so they could greet you in your own language.
This isn't a new idea, but it sure is a good one. I suggest a return to civility........and thank you for your time and attention 😀.

Sorry that citing the professional opinion of someone with 30 years experience in the field was too anecdotal for you! I figured you'd listen to her since she was white, born in the US, raised by 2 parents, and had a college education.
I measure people's intelligence by how well they function in all areas of their life and in how they treat their fellow human beings, especially those less fortunate than themselves.
Her opinion was not what was anecdotal, your previous posts were. I don't consider race, country of origin, or number of parents when reading an argument (I do consider education). The fact that I recognize that there are differences among the races, intelligence levels and classes is a different story.

IQ tests are completely accurate and have no bias. :roll:No way
Civility however, can easily be judged, especially on an internet forum.

Do you define patronizing as civil?

So I'll ask you, do you have a better method to measure intelligence, other than anecdotal, Ferris Bueller evidence? One can't say that IQ tests are faulty without putting forward an alternative?

I am curious 6thgen, you have a hypothesis that intelligence/race equates into civility somehow, but I've yet to see you show a solid source/survey justifying such. Bueller?,..... Bueller?..... Bueller?

No, but Bob stated "Beyond childhood, the only folks likely to change are by introspection, and very little introspection is going on with IQs south of 100."
If IQ tests are faulty, which is not irrefutable, how should we measure IQs?

No, I said that upbringing is more responsible than IQ. Bob said it was IQ. I was refuting this statement by scooterbug "Yes, I do! There are scientifically quantifiable differences between the sexes and different races. These do not however, effect one's overall intelligence or ability." And it wasn't a hypothesis, it was a fact. Until someone comes up with a better way to measure IQ, all we have is what is the established and accepted tool.

I agree that how one is raised is more important then your intelligence level in determining whether you will be polite or well mannered.
A high IQ doesn't mean you are smart, it means you scored well on a flawed test.
My beef is with you always thinking that it depends on your race, gender, or income level. I don't have my manners because I'm a female, or of european descent, or make X amount of money. I have them because that is how I was raised.
Part of my original post was that you need to see people as individuals and by doing so break down barriers - not further categorize and stereotype them.

Again, I never said civility depends on race or income level, I said that it was a factor in upbringing, which was a factor of civility. My beef with most of this board is despite the rhetoric on getting to the roots of problems and understanding them, most of you put your head in the sand when it comes to politically incorrect factors such as race, religion or class. I am all for seeing people as individuals, but handicapping IQ tests because they are unfair to blacks is not only patronizing, it is racist to expect less. Also, do you deny that scores on IQ tests correlate with a person?s intelligence?
SoWal ExpertAuthor
I agree that IQ scores roughly correlate with your potential for intelligence.
I've seen a lot of "book smart & life dumb" in my day!
IQ tests are flawed for a variety of reasons, not just because of a potential racial bias. Depends on who gives the test, who scores the test, whether the person takes tests well, how many times they have taken it, whether they studied/were prepped for it etc.

You have intelligence and knowledge mixed up. In short, intelligence represents the ability to reason or learn. Knowledge is the learned information. IQ tests don?t ask who the 23rd President of the US was, they gauge an individual?s ability to read and retain the fact that Benjamin Harrison was this republic?s 23rd President. That is one reason it is difficult to study or prepare for one. It would be like studying for a foot race.

Knowledge is retention of facts or techniques. Intelligence is how you function, reason, acquire and use knowledge.
A dyslexic person would score poorly in your example of reading comprehension and retention, so it would not be a good measure of their ability to learn the information.
People "study" for foot races all the time. It's called training!

Well then, I am curious on your take with how religion equates in this theory, because it's my opinion that most religions preach something akin to "love thy Neighbor" and "Peace be with you", which is a practice in civility and has nothing to do with race or income level. ????
IMO, this whole debate is really an exercise in futility. It's like trying to figure out if conservatives are more civil than liberals.

And people can study for IQ tests through reading and problem or puzzle solving. Regardless, no matter how much I trained, I would not be able to beat Deion Sanders in a foot race (IQ test is another matter). It would be silly to note that my shorter stride and less impressive physique made the foot race biased.

It depends on the tenets on the religion, thus the religion itself. Again, religion factors into upbringing, basic beliefs and culture. For that matter you could compare people from Charleston to people from Manhattan. I agree that this is an exercise in futility, but if you want to argue on if conservatives or liberals are more civil, it has far more to do with who is in power, rather than the philosophy itself.

Which is why an IQ test isn't a good measure!
No, but you could improve by training and beat someone of similar natural athletic ability.
Deion would beat you hands down in an intelligence test too. He's earned tens of millions of dollars playing multiple pro sports and parlayed his athletic knowledge and noteriety into a variety of fields & professions including broadcasting, music, writing, and various charities.

So, let me get this straight, we should only measure people's intelligence if they are similar? It's not fair for African Americans to compete with Whitey? Nah, that's not racist.

No, he wouldn't. The results would be similar to the foot race, with a different victor.

No, what I said is that if you took 2 people, regardless of race, who had the same IQ and one was then trained/prepped for an IQ test and one wasn't - you would get 2 different scores ......... for the same IQ.
Same as if you took two people, regardless of race, who had the same athletic ability and one was then trained/prepped for a foot race and one wasn't, you would get 2 different times............for the same ability level.
If you seriously think your mental abilities are as exceptional as Deion's athletic abilities, you would definitely score quite poorly on the intelligence test - they take points off if you are severely delusional!!!
