Bill Clinton coming Monday to Destin
July 30, 2007
By Florida Freedom Newspapers

For most of Monday, Harbor Docks restaurant owner Charles Morgan was giving odds of 70-30 that former President Bill Clinton would visit his establishment.
By that evening, the odds had gotten much better, as Clinton's advance team nailed down plans for an exclusive fund-raising event on heavily Republican turf in Northwest Florida.
"Somebody asked 'How did he know how to find y'all?' " Morgan said. "I said, 'Hey, if you're looking to find Democrats in this area, it's not too hard.' "
Only those who produce a check of $2,300 or more will be allowed inside Harbor Docks for the Hillary Clinton fund-raiser, said Toni Craig, who chairs Okaloosa County's Democratic Party. It is scheduled for 8 p.m. Monday.
"I asked, 'Well, what about us poor Democrats?' " Craig said. "At the very least, I'll have my Clinton supporters out at the street."
Clinton's wife, U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., leads among Democratic presidential hopefuls in Florida, according to poll results released Friday by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research.
She won't be at Monday's event.
She had support from 31 percent of the state's Democrats, compared to 17 percent for her closest rival, U.S. Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.
Florida's presidential primary is Jan. 29.
The former president last visited the area in the late 1990s for an Eglin Air Force Base memorial service honoring victims of the Khobar Towers terrorist bombing.
Morgan said Clinton's plan to visit has generated a lot of excitement in the area.
"The response has been very impressive," he said.
Secret Service agents were scheduled to arrive Thursday to begin preparations, Morgan said.
The restaurant owner did not know exactly what the protocol for such events was, and it was unclear whether media would be allowed to attend the event.
"I asked them how long he planned to speak, and they told me, 'He'll go as long as you've got a microphone in front of him,' " Morgan said. "I'm gonna trick him into playing the saxophone."
Morgan has traditionally been successful at luring big-name Democrats to Harbor Docks.
Bill McBride came to the restaurant in 2002, shortly before emerging victorious in a hard-fought Democratic primary and eventually losing to Jeb Bush in the governor's race.
Presidential hopeful and later vice presidential candidate John Edwards packed the restaurant during a 2003 campaign visit.

So do you believe it is fair to the consumer that they need to hire an attorney to interpret all of the fine print on the loan packets? I couldn't imagine sitting through a real estate closing where the buyer read the 70 or so pages of legal jargon regarding the sale and disclosures. For that matter, I cannot imagine the closing title company agent sitting through that either. Now a lawyer, on the otherhand, is paid by the hour, and she or he would have no problem with the time on the case.

People should have an attorney present when making what is likely the largest financial decision of their life.

I watched it too. Looks like it was made from someone, so deep in the trenches, that their lists are not open minded, and one big thing, Hillary is not running against Bush, so drop the comparison of whom would make for a better President. I'll gladly pick apart the top 10 list mentioned on the video, but anyone with an open mind should have no problem seeing the faults with the items on the list. By the way, they need a better editor that knows how to spell the simple words of copy, like Freedom of "Speech." The video mentions that Hillary will make a great President because she is a woman, and women care for their own. I tend to agree that women can be nurturing, but to make such a general statement, forgets all the women who have murdered their own kids, abandoned their children, and had abortions (noting it separately from the murders, though some may see it as the same -- not trying to argue that one).

Again, George W Bush is not running for President in 2008. Wake up and smell the coffee.

Do you subscribe to that line of thought when it comes to consumers understanding credit card applications, which are written so that only the credit card company's lawyers would comprehend?

I'm of the opinion that if people want to borrow money, they should read the terms of repayment and ask questions when they don't understand them. Or they should just wait until they have enough saved to purchase what they are borrowing for.

Eliminating pre-payment penalties would raise rates for everyone. If banks can't get a good estimate on their return, they'll take an average percentage of loans that are paid off early and increase everyone's rates to offset the loss in prepayment penalties. Most don't charge them anyway. It beguiles me that some believe that businesses eat costs imposed on them by the government. The real way to lower rates is to kill S-O and do away with federally insured money all together.

6th, you're answer is contradictory.

First of all, most pre-payment penalties were what were called "soft prepays" 6 months interest and that was only if you refinanced within no more than 1- 3-or 5 years. You also could make additional payments to principle if you like with a maximum amount.
States like NY have strict regulations about prepayment penalties, as does the OCC. (office of the comptroller who regulated federally charted Banks)
Also, most if not all, subprime lenders offered a base rate, then if you wanted to take the pre-pay penalty off, you could do so with a slight rate increase. (do you think anyone did this? )

A decision should have been made by the consumer and the Lender whether they thought that they would be able to refinance into a traditional mortgage before 3 years. Quite a few SP lenders even offered 1 year pre-pays.

There used to be a "few" banks that offered traditional mortgages with a 3 or 5 year penalty with a slight decrease in rate about .25%, but those people had no issues refinancing those. They had good credit and equity in their homes and they were offered in states with low closing costs.

When mortgages are sold on the secondary market, you don't mix apples with oranges, so traditional mortgages are not sold with subprime, or Alt-A.

So IMO, Hillary is look for the "woe is me vote group" the few folks who may have had subprime loans or exotic ARMs in the past 3 years who can't refinance because they have no equity.

The same group who didn't bother reading any disclosures, or didn't think to have their docs reviewed by an attorney for reasonable $500-1200 they charge. NYS is an attorney State, so you can't even get a contract completed without obtaining counsel. Refinances, most people came to closing without them, but the Bank attorneys were very good at explaining docs to the Borrowers, not to mention that there is a 3 day legal recission period on refinances of which docs could be reviewed and the loan rescinded at no costs to the Borrower.

:floor: ...I always have an attorney with me. When we closed on the WC place, Mr. K said that he would never let a client sign all the provisions we had to sign. Just shows you how lucky I am to have a fool for a lawyer and he had a fool for his client...ME!!! He also redlined so many documents for St. Joe, that they should have paid him.

Wait a minute...I thought we were talking about Bill Cigar here?

How is it contradictory? If anything, your post proves my point that if you can't charge a prepayment penalty, rates will increase. I agree on Hillary as an opportunist.

Your post made it sound like rates across the board for all loan types would increase and that would affect everyone. I explained how that doesn't happen.

Then you said that most Banks don't have pre-payment penalties anyway.

That sounds contradictory to me.

Fair enough. Should have read that banks that the rates will increase for the loans that would have a pre-payment penalty.
