Goya O'boya......love it. :D
I love their coconut soda and they have pineapple too.
Sometimes I mix together and make a pina colada soda.

SJ, I would imagine "For the Health of It" in BMB could give you lots of ideas that are for purist vegans?
Very true...Ed won't steer you wrong!

That's why I mentioned ovo-lacto. Hell, I dunno what you do about pasta if you're ovo-lacto. (I mean, SJ, what do you eat at Borago if you're ovo-lacto?) Actually I think that my pasta machine recipe book has a recipe with no eggs or milk.

What is ovo-lacto? ( I get the lacto part)

It sounds like a woman's problem.

SJ is not vegan...I assume he is going to a party that consists of mostly vegans....:D and maybe he will be converted...NAHH...chef John would NEVER permit it....

Ovo: relating to eggs.

And yes, only we women have eggs (until a certain age, that is -- then the ovaries disappear). Really we don't need males to carry on the human race. All we need is a big sperm bank (and maybe some rabbits to add some funn), and the hu-woman race will continue.

Of course, I am fond of having my Big D around.

I'm not a Vegan, so I can eat anything, but this is a Vegan Potluck, which I'm attending, and I want to prepare a truly Vegan meal.

Ovo is egg...guess it is egg and milk free???...but being a vegan consists of much much more than just not eating certian foods

:floor: For a minute there, I thought you knew me, but I could never make it as a Vegan. I've known a few, but I couldn't do it. I'm a carnivore at heart, but occasionally, I slip and become a temporary omnivore. I am hungry 24-7, and even more so lately, that I changed my workout routine. I think that is a good thing as I think it may mean that I am eating leaner meals and my metabolism is increasing. I must say that it sucks to be starving hungry all the time, even after I eat. My six pack will never come out from behind the curtain if it means living a starving hungry life.

Yes, I am going to Vegan Potluck, and the host is Vegan. There may be other Vegans there, but I have not a clue. It is good to have to think outside of the box, though, so I enjoy the challenge of creating a fantastically delicious plate of food. I have some easy standards like eggplant, zucchini, yellow squash, vidalia onions, and portabella mushrooms brushed with olive oil, and touched with salt and pepper, then lightly grilled. Yummy! I know that one of you has the magic recipe that opens my mind to something new. Keep them coming. I can search online for recipes, and that is not what I'm asking for. Looking for YOUR recipes or ideas.

By definition, "purist vegans" don't exist. One is either Vegan or something other than vegan. ;-)

As pasta makes me think of a hearty meal, where I am sweating as I burn extra calories, I am leaning toward lighter foods. It is August in Florida. (insert sweating smilie here) Now that recipe will come in handy, later in Jan or Feb, so keep it handy. ;-)

Seriously, you make a great point, and one that I've often made. So many want-to-be vegetarians need to learn how to property eat, prior to deciding to start their vegetarian diet. I hear so many vegetarians being unhealthy and they end up going back to including meat into their diet.

The first and probably only case of honest to goodness rickets I have ever seen was in a little girl who lived in a hardcore vegan commune in podunk Louisiana...poor little gal's legs were bowed like a ship's hull, but y'know, no animals were hurt in the process;-)

Okay, SJ. Go get a variety of heirloom tomatoes. Slice them up. Add really good EVOO and balsamic vinegar to your taste -- preferably not too far in advance of serving time (add the vinegar carefully -- you can always add more, but you can never reverse it). Sprinkle with Kosher salt or sea salt or garlic salt (your preference) and freshly-ground black pepper. Take some basil, tear it by hand to avoid the dark edges from cutting, and sprinkle it on top. That tastes awesome.

For those who aren't worried about eggs or milk, take some good bread (like from Modica), slice it thinly, spray with EVOO (you must have one of those QuickMists from Williams-Sonoma), and broil on both sides until crisp. The 'maters can be served on top.

YUM! We do this frequently in the summertime.

Awesomely Easy Sesame Asparagus

INGREDIENTS

 • 1 bunch fresh asparagus, trimmed
 • 1 tablespoon olive oil
 • 2 tablespoons black sesame seeds, lightly toasted
 • kosher salt to taste
DIRECTIONS

 1. Fill a large saucepan with 1/2 inch of water and bring to a boil. Cook asparagus until tender-crisp, about 5 minutes. Drain, then rinse with cold water. Return pan to the stove over medium heat, pour in oil, and swirl around pan. Shake excess water off of the asparagus, and toss in oil with sesame seeds, and salt to reheat.
Tip
To toast sesame seeds, toss them in a heavy bottomed skillet over medium heat until they are fragrant.

SJ this sounded good

I had to look it up, because one of my nephews adopted a vegan diet a couple of years ago,(11 yrs old) but he eats bread, but won't eat fish. Matter of fact, we had this whole discussion about why I do not consider fish meat after he cried after we went to a huge produce market in ATL. He felt they mishandled the crabs. (We didn't know they sold fish too)
He's not local to me, so he is not here enough eating at my home that I did any research on it, so I looked and was surprised to see all the definitions vegans have for their choices and was surprised to see some "vegans" ate fish.

If they eat fish, they are not Vegans. Vegans do not eat animals or animal bi-products.

Since I cannot remember some of the types of vegetarians, I looked them up. Here are a few differences in the types of vegetarians:

Lacto Ovo Vegetarian
A lacto ovo vegetarian does not eat meat, fish or poultry, but eats eggs and milk. They eat eggs and products made with eggs in them, yogurt, cheese, milk and ice creams.

Lacto Vegetarian
A lacto vegetarian does not eat meat, fish, poultry or eggs, but includes dairy products in their diet. They will eat milk, ice cream (that does not include eggs), yogurt and cheese. They would avoid ice creams, baked goods, pancakes and veggie burgers that contain eggs.

Vegan
A vegan does not eat any fish, meat, poultry, eggs, dairy products or foods that contain any of these products. They also do not use any non-food items that contain products from animals, including wool from sheep, leather and silk. Vegans often do not eat honey, because bees may be killed while harvesting it.

According to many vegans, it is pronounced VEE-gun. A vegan diet consists of vegetables, grains, beans, nuts, fruits and seeds. This diet tends to be high in fiber and moderate in protein and fat.

A vegan will not use margarine that has casein, a milk product, in it and they do not use shoes that are made from leather. Vegans do not eat white granulated sugar because it is often processed by using char derived from animal bones to whiten the sugar. They also do not use products that are tested on animals, as are many cosmetics.

Macrobiotics
A macrobiotic diet is mainly vegetarian, but macrobiotic diets often include seafood. In this diet all other meat products are excluded, as are eggs and dairy products. They also do not eat "nightshade vegetables" (potato, pepper and eggplant), refined sugar and tropical fruits. This diet contains many foods found in Asian countries such as miso soup, root vegetables (daikon and lotus) and sea vegetables (seaweed, kelp, arame).
It emphasizes eating locally grown foods that are in season. Meals consist of 50% to 60% grains, 25% locally grown produce, and the rest of the diet mainly consists of beans and soups. In lesser amounts fruits, nuts and seeds are eaten.

This diet is based on the Chinese principles of yin and yang. Some people follow this diet as a philosophy of life and others follow it for health reasons.

Fruitarian
A fruitarian is a person who only eats fruits and vegetables that are actually classified as fruits such as avocados, nuts, seeds, eggplant, zucchini and tomatoes.

Raw or Living Food Diet
One who follows a raw food diet is a person who for the most part only eats raw foods that are not cooked. One who follows this type of diet believes that cooking changes food in a negative way and makes it less nutritious, diminishing the vitamin and mineral contents of the food. Most people who follow a raw-food diet only eat between 50% to 80% of their food raw. There is some logic to a raw food diet in the fact that cooking food destroys nutrients. But cooking food on the other hand makes foods easier to digest, which often offsets the anti-nutritional factors.
