I should add this to another reason I love winter.
Anyone have a good remedy? Mr OL would say I need to drink more water and I do agree with him but for right now I need something.
I've tried so many products ---other than the obvious chap sticks, blistik stuff, what do you use that works? My latest is aquafor. I thought it was working but today my lips are more chapped than ever.

Burt's Bee Medicated lip Balm. Bought it for MANgo and it worked wonders.I love Burt's. Never leave home without it.
CVS is selling the Burt's Bee line now, but you can also get it in health stores too. They have a bunch of different ones. I use the Pomegranite. Yummy.

I can tell you some stories! I have kept Hawaiian Tropic 45 sunscreen chapstick in business for the past 10 years. I run with them (in Michigan winters too!), go to the beach with them, keep one on my nightstand, and keep one in the car.
I have THE most sensitive lips. I am the person who would get 30 cold sores from weather change or stress. I was first chair flute for a concert in Middle School and not only did I get them on the top lip, I got them on the bottom too.
When I was pregnant with my daughter and went to Florida, I had the worst break-out ever. My doctor said to put on zinc oxide after that.
When I went to Modica's Market my first trip here, I picked up the Hawaian Tropic chapstick and it worked! I have been hooked since.
Carmex makes my lips tingle (not in a good way, but that's just my lips!)
I have used everything, but nothing has worked as well as the HT!
Supermom - you are telling my life story complete with multiple fever blisters in my younger life, and still have them occasionally (a few times per year - but not so massive).
I agree with you - Hawaiian Tropic 45 - it moisturizes and really protects. And for those with real lip problems/herpes/etc., PREVENTION is absolute key.
Yes - Patchouli's has several brands of lip balms/moisturizers that work very well. Always use spf.
Burt's Bees lip stuff is good.
I buy and try lots of different kinds of lip protectors. and I've learned to keep this stuff in my car, in my purse, in my bathroom, next to bed, in the kitchen, etc.
in other words... apply, apply, apply!!! and I'm not talking about lipstick. I'm talking about real good moisturizer and protector. KEEP it on at all times.
Then you'll be fine!
(when you do get a fever blister - well, this is another thread, and perhaps one worth starting)
Hey,
I don't know if you are in Sowal or not. But we swear by the Patchouli's brand lip balm.
I like their brand, plus a few others they carry. you can never have enough good lip stuff. (insert big pouty lip smilie).

a fever blister?
I have two girlfriends who also get fever blisters, and I swear, if I look at them I will get it.Edited

I get totally insane this time of the year if I don't have chapstick my my side at all times. I also get nosebleeds from the dryness. One night I woke up in the middle of the night and my head was in a pool of blood. Our stocking stuffers this year? Chapstick and saline spray.

a Shape Magazine article (Mar 2002) regarding lip care:
Shape Mag article / excerpt:
GET BETTER-LOOKING LIPS - FAST
With a little loving care, your lips can be perfect in no time. Just follow these steps - and then pucker up!
Take a water bottle with you wherever you go. Drinking enough water (the equivalent of at least 9 cups of fluids daily) will keep the body, skin and lips hydrated.
Lick the smacking habit. Licking your lips damages the protective barrier, which can dry out the lips, says Robert Brodell, M.D., a dermatologist in Warren, Ohio. (Saliva contains digestive enzymes that can break down this barrier.) Instead, regularly apply lip balm like La Mer The Lip Balm (S40; at Saks Fifth Avenue Stores).
Know thy balms. Look for hydrating ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, vitamin E and almond, jojoba or coconut oils. Good old petroleum jelly (think: Vaseline) works well too. If you have sensitive skin, use camphor-based medicated lip balms sparingly. (They can be irritating.) Instead, opt for the camphor-free Aesop Rosehip Seed Lip Treatment with shea butter ($15; 888-223-2750). But if you have hearty skin, try ChapStick Medicated lip balm ($1.69; at drugstores) with camphor and menthol.
Plug in a humidifer. It can replace moisture in dry indoor air, keeping your lips (and your skin) hydrated. Editor's favorite: Bionaire Digital Cool Moisture Humidifier ($80; bionaire.com).
Exfoliate when necessary. Lip exfoliators (products that contain fruit-acid-based alpha or beta hydroxy acids) slough off dead skin - much like the ones you'd use on your face, says New York dermatologist Dennis Gross, M.D. "But if you have sensitive skin or your lips are severely chapped or cracked, use these products cautiously [no more than once weekly) as they do contain acids that can irritate skin," says Gross. (Signs of irritation: intense stinging and/or persistent redness.) Try Blistex Lip Revitalizer with AHA and vitamin E ($1.89; at drugstores) and Lancome Primordiale Lip Revitalizing Treatment with Gatuline, an AHA alternative ($29; lancome.com).
Protect, protect, protect. Lips are susceptible to sunburn since they lack melanin, the pigment that helps shield skin from the sun. Apply a layer of a sun-protective product daily like Neutrogena Lip Moisturizer SPF 15 ($3; at drugstores) or look for a lipstick with SPF like Estee Lauder Futurist SPF 15 ($17.50; esteelauder.com), which comes in 22 shades.

A cowboy rides into town and stops at the
saloon, gets off his horse walks around to the back of it,
lifts up the tail and kisses it smack on the anus.
The bartender inside the bar notices this and
thinks it a little strange. When the cowboy saunters up to
the bar and orders a drink the bartender asks him, "I
noticed when you got off your horse you walked behind it
and kissed it on the ass. Can I ask why?"
The cowboy answers, "Chapped lips".
"Wow!" says the bartender., "It cures chapped lips?"
"No, but it sure as hell keeps you from licking them."

A correction for the article Tootsie posted from Shape magazine.
"Know thy balms. Look for hydrating ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, vitamin E and almond, jojoba or coconut oils. "
Correction: Coconut oil is very drying to the skin. It's primary purpose in lip balms is a hardening agent. Avoid it if you can. Burt's Bee's uses it in their lip balm, and many people use it, but it will have a dryer effect on your lips when compared to a similar product without the coconut oil.
If you find it in your soaps, you will also notice the drying effect it has on your skin. Not more than your commercial detergents being sold as soaps, but more than those without it. Again, it is used as a hardening agent, but also as a lathering agent.

lol. Coconut Oil makes the SOAP hard, so that is probably only good for her.

I grew up with this. Mainly because it lasted forever.

Cocomut oil has quite a bit of anti-microbial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal healing properties. Probably why Burt's Bee uses it for chapped lips to prevent infection. Then coupled with all the other goodies, it offsets the drying effect.
hmmmm......can't remember
I still want some of that rosemary/peppermint/honey home-brew...
