I should add this to another reason I love winter.

Anyone have a good remedy? Mr OL would say I need to drink more water and I do agree with him but for right now I need something.

I've tried so many products ---other than the obvious chap sticks, blistik stuff, what do you use that works? My latest is aquafor. I thought it was working but today my lips are more chapped than ever.

How do this threads get sooooo off course?

Lipstick & lipgloss. I NEVER have chapped lips.

Me, either...:idontno: (Sometimes I use Blistex Liptone when I don't want full-out lipstick.)

Oh my gosh! I just thought of this. BB, you remind me sooooooo much of my friend Martha. She ALWAYS has her lipstick on and is perfectly coordinated--never a hair out of place. Well, we have this other friend, and she always complained that she would never find a man. Martha's sage advice to her back in the late 80's was this: "You should really think about wearing red lipstick and big earrings." :D

:lolabove:me! or rather, NOT me! I really don't like lipstick. it looks great on others, but full out lipstick makes me feel like a clown. and some women truly do go around looking clown-like, IMO.

not you BB. you look FABUlous at all times.

Burt's Bee Medicated lip Balm. Bought it for MANgo and it worked wonders. :D

CVS is selling the Burt's Bee line now, but you can also get it in health stores too. They have a bunch of different ones. I use the Pomegranite. Yummy.

Burt's is the best! My lips were horribly chapped years ago. Tried numerous products & Burt's was the only one that helped. I haven't had chapped lips since. I am addicted to this stuff! I don't leave home without it.

I like the cuticle cream too - really really works, almost instantly.

I used to like it best, until I found Naked Bees. It doesn't contain the coconut oil that SJ says is drying, which explains why I had to keep applying it frequently, over and over. I bet that is grayt for sales too, come to think of it. If you can find it, try Naked Bees, ya'll. It is like $3.50 but it lasts a lot longer because you don't have to keep on applying it every hour or so. It's kind of hard to find.

I'll look for Naked Bees.

but, I think the kind of treatment depends largely on what you need at the moment. Naked Bees sounds like a really good way to protect your lips by using all the time.

a Shape Magazine article (Mar 2002) regarding lip care:

Shape Mag article / excerpt:

GET BETTER-LOOKING LIPS - FAST
With a little loving care, your lips can be perfect in no time. Just follow these steps - and then pucker up!

Take a water bottle with you wherever you go. Drinking enough water (the equivalent of at least 9 cups of fluids daily) will keep the body, skin and lips hydrated.

Lick the smacking habit. Licking your lips damages the protective barrier, which can dry out the lips, says Robert Brodell, M.D., a dermatologist in Warren, Ohio. (Saliva contains digestive enzymes that can break down this barrier.) Instead, regularly apply lip balm like La Mer The Lip Balm (S40; at Saks Fifth Avenue Stores).

Know thy balms. Look for hydrating ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, vitamin E and almond, jojoba or coconut oils. Good old petroleum jelly (think: Vaseline) works well too. If you have sensitive skin, use camphor-based medicated lip balms sparingly. (They can be irritating.) Instead, opt for the camphor-free Aesop Rosehip Seed Lip Treatment with shea butter ($15; 888-223-2750). But if you have hearty skin, try ChapStick Medicated lip balm ($1.69; at drugstores) with camphor and menthol.

Plug in a humidifer. It can replace moisture in dry indoor air, keeping your lips (and your skin) hydrated. Editor's favorite: Bionaire Digital Cool Moisture Humidifier ($80; bionaire.com).

Exfoliate when necessary. Lip exfoliators (products that contain fruit-acid-based alpha or beta hydroxy acids) slough off dead skin - much like the ones you'd use on your face, says New York dermatologist Dennis Gross, M.D. "But if you have sensitive skin or your lips are severely chapped or cracked, use these products cautiously [no more than once weekly) as they do contain acids that can irritate skin," says Gross. (Signs of irritation: intense stinging and/or persistent redness.) Try Blistex Lip Revitalizer with AHA and vitamin E ($1.89; at drugstores) and Lancome Primordiale Lip Revitalizing Treatment with Gatuline, an AHA alternative ($29; lancome.com).

Protect, protect, protect. Lips are susceptible to sunburn since they lack melanin, the pigment that helps shield skin from the sun. Apply a layer of a sun-protective product daily like Neutrogena Lip Moisturizer SPF 15 ($3; at drugstores) or look for a lipstick with SPF like Estee Lauder Futurist SPF 15 ($17.50; esteelauder.com), which comes in 22 shades.

Thanks for posting this! I am trying to drink more water (glaring at my diet coke as I type!) but didn't realize it hydrates your lips too! Good to know!

Re: My medicine cabinet (would be a good thread too) used to only contain Campho-Phenique in the bottle and in the tube and cotton balls.

Blistex didn't work for me. I had a good friend who was in Dental school when I was single, who used to supply me with a lysine based ointment. I have had prescriptions for my cold sores, and used to get a shot (can't remember what it was) but when I was in elementary school and would get them, I went to the doctor and got a shot! I think my doctor thought I was allergic to citric acid because sometimes when I ate oranges, I would get them too.

I swear I can look at someone with one and get one! At first ITCH and my lips will itch before it breaks the surface, I run for the Campho!

Btw: the Dentist was this verrrrry good looking guy named Ross. I hated going to see him when I was coming to ask for free ointment! Wonder what happened to Ross?

oh SM, I have tried it all too. now I keep abreva and zylactin in my purse and bath at all times. the zylactin medicated lip balm is useful when you think you may be prone - then just start using it, etc. when I feel the "itch" the zylactin gel goes on my entire mouth and I keep it on there constantly. typically I can keep it from coming out at all, or keep it small.

I also take prescription Famvir prior to any facial treatments (which can trigger a fever blister for some reason; especially treatments using glycolic acid).

Bless your heart and all of you who are prone to "FB's". you may get one if you say it out loud.

The other thing that I found that can stop a FB from starting is hydrogen peroxide. I found it in an ointment/tube form a few years ago and ran out and now I can't find it anymore. But if I feel one starting I apply it with a q-tip or drop it on from the cap of the bottle.

I can tell you some stories! I have kept Hawaiian Tropic 45 sunscreen chapstick in business for the past 10 years. I run with them (in Michigan winters too!), go to the beach with them, keep one on my nightstand, and keep one in the car.

I have THE most sensitive lips. I am the person who would get 30 cold sores from weather change or stress. I was first chair flute for a concert in Middle School and not only did I get them on the top lip, I got them on the bottom too.

When I was pregnant with my daughter and went to Florida, I had the worst break-out ever. My doctor said to put on zinc oxide after that.

When I went to Modica's Market my first trip here, I picked up the Hawaian Tropic chapstick and it worked! I have been hooked since.

Carmex makes my lips tingle (not in a good way, but that's just my lips!)

I have used everything, but nothing has worked as well as the HT!

I noticed in your description, Supermom, that your breakouts stopped shortly after coming to SoWal (even if it was just for your first trip). Perhaps that was the cure - less stress, great weather, good people, etc.

Beachbummett is the queen of the right lip color, if you ask me...

Now that I'm not landscaping, I will be lipsticked again. (Although I still like my Blistex Liptone--it really goes nicely with my skin for a natural look.) The other problem with lipstick and landscaping was leaving a tube in my purse in a hot car...little too soft, if you know what I mean. I store it in my fridge in the summer for that very reason.

I'm a Clinique fan myself. Their colors work the best for me.
