Yes, I have started yet another project on this old pucking house, the Dallas series. I am a serial procrastinator and Mr. K has been after me to get off sowal.com and take care of business. Good thing he left for a week today...been gearing up for some new landscape (DD is my master gardner) and decided to rip up the old red brick patio off the deck. They came today...things were going great...then, the discovery was made...
there is pucking concrete underneath the entire patio and they are now jackhammering the sheet out of it!!
😱 :bang: :( $$$$$$

Life story of anyone with an old house...do one thing and two more jobs reveal themselves. What is your "this old house" (or new house) nightmare?

I moved my house from Ft Walton Beach (behind Staff's Restaurant) to Pt Washington...the house was built in 1900. Moving it on 98 before the 4 lane is another whole story.

Knocked a wall out of the kitchen and the entire covered back porch separated from the house about 6 inches. Had to tear it off and start new.

Oh...and found an old "dirty" book in the wall when we tore out the sheet rock.

Yep. 1954 here, which makes me the baby of the bunch. I need new plumbing (as you've all heard too many times) I have no insulation in the walls, and need some more in the attic (I'd love to do that stuff that sticks up under the floors), I need to replace a bunch of outlets, need to replace all the windows at some point, I got no central heat or air...

...and it is apparently snake-infested.

(But I love, love, love my little house!)

Oh, yay...a support group! 1946 here and I really love it, too...beats the other one...1926! Had radiant barrier sprayed in the attic and more insulation blown in on Thursday...some poor soul stepped on a vent and it is now hanging in the living room. Yes, someone is coming to fix the sheetrock and remount the vent.

Me too Aud. 1986 here. No complaints. I'm very thankful..it keeps us warm and dry.😀 If I could change one thing it would be a bigger room for the kids to hang out with their friends. We do have a big back yard so in the summer it works out.

Miss K, what are your plans for the spot they are clearing? Sorry about the jackhammer!!! That is probably my least favorite noise ever! Maybe you should go to Target for a while.

I think ours was built in 1979--judging from the lovely harvest gold bathtub and countertops. :yikes:

Ours is circa 1972 - Brady Bunch series. Wallpaper in EVERY SINGLE ROOM. Mr. JR has finally gotten all of that removed.

Mr JR has also removed all the paneling, fake ceiling beams; ripped out god-awful ugly metal banisters and had custom woodwork designed and installed.

Removed all turquoise, harvest gold, and pink fixtures in bathrooms.

Every window replaced.

Total kitchen remodel (literally top to bottom) with removal of scary Mediterranean cabinets and gold tile back splash.

ripped out patio with new paver installation & new landscaping; new roof; additional insulation in attic; new fence.

LeafGuard gutters (Mr. JR's most favorite thing!)

really - the list just goes on and on.

Fortunately, Mr. JR is VERY handy and likes doing much of it but says he's getting too old so he's hiring most of it out now.

But we're happy with it. If the previous owner saw it now it would be unrecognizable!

Oh Miss Kitty Miss Kitty. CONCRETE You have said the golden word. Or maybe it's the leaden word. The same thing that happened to you, happened to us!!! When we bought our circa 1925 home it had a huge (and I mean huge) paved concrete landing pad in the back by the garage. I'm not a master gardener for nothing and I couldn't see wasting perfectly good gardening beds on concrete. So we hired someone to rip out the concrete. Sure, they said. Easy job.

It turned out that the concrete was almost 6" thick and gridded with rebar every 12". It was a nightmare!! A job that should have taken 3-5 days ended up taking 3 months and we had mountains of concrete everywhere. Luckily this happened nine years ago and I was much younger then.

Putting Heart of Pine floors in my new house (circa 2007) with two overexcited Border Collies--What TF was I thinking!!! I guess you could call the scrathes and gouges "charm."

3 months? :yikes: Oh well...guess I'll just go to sowal and not worry about it. 😀
I just went and looked at the rebar...wonder how much the scrap yard would give me? Sure would like to put some plants in the garden! They didn't make much headway...my landscaper says it sure would be nice if we had the room to get a Bobcat in.
