Yes, I have started yet another project on this old pucking house, the Dallas series. I am a serial procrastinator and Mr. K has been after me to get off sowal.com and take care of business. Good thing he left for a week today...been gearing up for some new landscape (DD is my master gardner) and decided to rip up the old red brick patio off the deck. They came today...things were going great...then, the discovery was made...
there is pucking concrete underneath the entire patio and they are now jackhammering the sheet out of it!!
😱 :bang: :( $$$$$$
Life story of anyone with an old house...do one thing and two more jobs reveal themselves. What is your "this old house" (or new house) nightmare?

Our house is circa 1910 with additions in the 1930's and the 1950's. All I have to say is that you've got to want it.

I nominate this post and thread title to be in the funniest thread and post of the year. Kitty, sorry for your troubles, but you have a great way of making everything better with your sense of humor. Come on October!

I think people would be terrified I had anything concrete in my backyard, and then had to dig it up.
Good luck, Kitty. One project leads to another and another..........

Mine was built in 1942 by my grandfather & great uncle. I love it but sometimes feel as if the upkeep is too overwhelming for me. Everytime I think about selling it, I get guilty thinking that my grandfather put so much work into it - he dug the foundation by hand.
Miss K - I feel your pain. You are absolutely right in that when you start a project you end up with a couple more jobs that you weren't counting on. Good luck with your project!

I love this thread. . . .it makes me very thankful for my house that hasn't had any major issues -- if you don't count my husband dangling through the ceiling the day before our first guest were to arrive. Since that was a man-made issue, I don't count it!
Edit: Knock on wood. I don't want the house to start falling apart now!

I moved my house from Ft Walton Beach (behind Staff's Restaurant) to Pt Washington...the house was built in 1900. Moving it on 98 before the 4 lane is another whole story.
Knocked a wall out of the kitchen and the entire covered back porch separated from the house about 6 inches. Had to tear it off and start new.
Oh...and found an old "dirty" book in the wall when we tore out the sheet rock.
Got any pics? I loved Staff's when I was little. Where was it behind Staff's?
Oh Miss Kitty Miss Kitty. CONCRETE You have said the golden word. Or maybe it's the leaden word. The same thing that happened to you, happened to us!!! When we bought our circa 1925 home it had a huge (and I mean huge) paved concrete landing pad in the back by the garage. I'm not a master gardener for nothing and I couldn't see wasting perfectly good gardening beds on concrete. So we hired someone to rip out the concrete. Sure, they said. Easy job.
It turned out that the concrete was almost 6" thick and gridded with rebar every 12". It was a nightmare!! A job that should have taken 3-5 days ended up taking 3 months and we had mountains of concrete everywhere. Luckily this happened nine years ago and I was much younger then.
That picture alone scares me from buying an old house. However, I grew up in one and absolutely love them.
Due to the drought last summer, our house broke in half. I'm not kidding. The slab broke diagonally from one corner to the other.
 You're kidding right? What did you do?

Right behind it. The house was on the sound for 100 years and owned by the same family for all that time. The owners built a Bed and Breakfast in front of it and the county made them make room for additional parking, (after the fact)so the house had to be torn down or moved.

My house is 2003 - and I just had to replace the washer. You would think they would last longer than 5.5 years!!!
And I specifically wanted the "Maytag" washer and dryer since the old one was at least 20 something years old - BIG mistake here!!!
Anyhoo, got a new washer (NOT a Maytag and anyway, the store didn't have any in - they had been recalled - Imagine that!!!) and that baby sounds like a jet when it winds down - I'm thinking of taking in "washin" just so I can hear it run!!!

:yikes:Wow, LL. What do you do about something like that?
First, you stand around scratching your head, then you call these guys, give them all your money, and they come out and do this to your house.

They really did a great job. The yard was a wreck but Mrs. LL and I eventually got it back together. I highly recommend Dwyer.

Are those jacks? Do they jack up the house?!
