Fox News is not a news organization

This morning, their poll of the day is "Who should take the lead in fighting Gulf Oil Spill?"

FOXNews.com - Who Should Take the Lead in Fighting Gulf Oil Spill?

I listened to WWL all weekend, and even the angriest, most vitriolic talk show host in New Orleans now understands that, by law, as passed after Valdez incident, that BP has to take the lead, and why.

Instead of explaining this to their audience, Fox just fans the flames of discontent. I can't accept that they don't understand the issue, they just choose to dumb it down and make it controversial.

Fox news needs to be made to clean up their act.

Just want to say I think Geo has a good approach when bringing up an issue. he sometimes starts by asking a question, and the issue goes from there. this is a good way to engage people but I see some folks are actually offended by the original question. I appreciate the way Geo can ask a question, discuss logically and kindly, and provide his own thoughts on an issue. He is always respectful. it seems to me a few posters are being unfair by bashing him for the question, and making assumptions about him personally for even asking the question. anyway, I just wanted to say I appreciate people, like Geo, who can engage in debate, without giving out personal judgements on another poster.

I agree with you Tootsie. I rarely agree with Geo on the issues but I appreciate his thoughtful and respectful posts. Keep up the good work Geo

Hi. I thought I read every post in the thread and didn't recall anyone asking for ratings. But if they did, my bad. Nice of you to provide.

But I stand by my point that ratings don't have anything to do with this thread.

No one said- Fox News isn't highly rated. The integrity of their programming is what is being questioned.
:idontno:

this piece questions the integrity of all the television news...which was my point a few posts above.

Op-Ed Columnist - They Don’t Report. You Don’t Have to Decide. - NYTimes.com
As we venerate the heroic street vendors who gave America its reality check last weekend, we should remember that they were the first to report what was happening in Times Square and that those covering and attending the White House Correspondents Dinner were the last.

I saw it on the Daily Show, then stopped my channel surfing to watch it be replayed on MSNBC. I love Lewis Black!

Though I must say that after seeing his intro and closing comments Olbermann is an even bigger dumbarse than some of the Fox folks.

If someone starts a thread about Simon and Garfunkel being lousy live and I didn't agree,,, I wouldn't defend them by pointing out that they aren't talking about all kinds of other groups I dislike who are lousy live.

I'd have to say they do sound a tad "off" when live, but I guess who doesn't! I was JUST thinking this the other day when listening to one of their live performances lol!

Back to Fox and Friends :D

You just missed Colbert completely making a mess of Glenn Beck. How does that nut case (Beck) stay on the air? His latest nonsense is that he has a hundred year Plan for America which was given to him by God. This is journalism?

I don't watch Beck but my assumption is that it is not journalism by any standards.

I had not seen Black before. I really enjoyed his craziness! :funn:
Thanks for the introduction.

.

Louis Black is HYSTERICALLY FUNNY. I'm TRANSFIXED by his hand movements and jowl shaking brrrrrrowww!!
Netflix him ... one of his funniest shows is entitled Red-White-and-Screwed and
(I think?) is available on instant play.

I'll ashamedly admit I have not watched Glenn Beck. Too many of my beloved right wing (albeit frothing-at-the-mouth nutz) friends are huge fans of his and come back spouting unsubstantiated crapola with him as the quoted 'authority'. But that's a lame excuse/prejudice on my part. I need to at least watch once...
but I'll keep my flying-monkey-creepy hide-my-face blanket handy.

Glenn Beck will be an assault to your sensibilities, unless you buy into that kind of programming- and I know you to be too sweet and sensible for that. He goes into my "sad little person" category, with Rush and that awful blond haired lady, whose name escapes me now. They are just so over-the-top hateful it boggles my mind.

..and it certainly doesn't come anywhere close to journalism...not sure what to call it really...would make a good study for some psychology student probably..

For anyone who has never seen Andersen Cooper or who doesn't believe he is sharp---

Pls watch this interview he did last night with a BP executive.

http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2010/05/19/ac360?-full-interview-with-bps-bob-dudley/

I personally believe his reporting has influenced the Obama admin, the EPA and BP to step it up...

Geo:

I have hesitated to jump in on this but here goes. IMHO Fox is definitely a news organization. So are CNN, MSNBC, Huffington, and every other right, center and left wing media organization. News is information about events. All of them share information and all have a fundemental bias.
Everyone has their point of view and prefer to have their opinions reenforced. That is human nature. So people watch/read/listen to what makes them comfortable.
My belief system tilts far to the right. Thus I favor Fox as it tends to be right as well. But I like Anderson Cooper and prefer Morning Joe most mornings to Fox & Friends. And I like Chris Mathews and really love his books athough I disagree with most of his politics. Stewart is funny most of the time but I don't care for Colbert. I cannot stand Olberman.
I love O'Reilly. I like Hannity personally but think he shills for the Republican party even when they are wrong. But I have never viewed his show as "news" but a video form of an op-ed page. Hannity vs. Bob Beckel is must see TV on Mondays, if only for the entertainment. Same goes for Beck. Beck gets off on controversy and it has made him alot of money. To each his own.

Idlewind thanks for your thoughtful, respectful, insightful postl. I mostly agree with your analysis of news organizations and various types of programs they offer. perhaps all news organizations do have a slant but they really shouldn't be so blatantly obvious. Why is it that Fox News is the ONLY one that has such an obvious slant to the far right - and their kind of programming can be inflammatory, obviously geared to satisfy the "news" needs of just a certain group of Americans? I think this is what many here have a problem with.

people say NPR is "liberal". Many appreciate the fact that NPR consistent presents programs which are highly professional, offering excellent coverage and reporting (without the drama), timely and thought provoking, covering science, education and issues from around the globe, and never ever resorting to inflammatory programming. just educational with an intent to broaden our understanding of the world, cultures, events, history, issues, etc. all in an interesting but very friendly kind of program designed to encourage input and perspective from all sides - respectfully. I guess PBS is liberal too.

so, yes, News organizations definitely put out their own slant and their own philosophy - and we can clearly see which one works for us. Fox has worked to brand itself as fair and accurate - and that is the kicker for many - its just absurd. seems contradictory to me to say you are fair and accurate when you are pushing one rather extreme agenda.
