A great video contrasting the Great Communicator against the chosen One and his lackeys.

Jenny I agree it started way before Obama, I would say with Clinton (whom I voted for once). Ironically when he was in office my husband made the most money.
As for Not paying attention to college, I already have one in college. He will graduate next year, so I am very familiar with the costs. As again we got very little help. (He graduated from High School with Honors with a 3.9 GPA)
I don't blame my daughter's Best friend at all. I know first hand about her father because they have had to stay with us when he was drunk. We have helped her mom and brothers many times. (She attended the same private school as my daughter for very little tuition while we paid 12,000.00 a year).I don't want it to seem like I don't want the same for less fortunate kids, I just get frustrated with people taking advantage of the system, while my husband works very hard every day to support our family and pay our bills.
As you assume that my daughter didn't work as hard as her friend well not true. Her scores and GPA were higher. She is attending a small Christian college in Alabama and they offer very few academic scholarships. Her high school also tried to find scholarships, but we didn't get any. We will manage, but it is hard enough to pay for our on kids and help out everyone else as well.
One of the main reasons I am frustrated with this administration is we have dealt with his so called stimulus jobs. My husband installs water and sewer. We got one of these stimulus jobs. He worked 4 months without the first paycheck. You try paying bills, tuition and keep a company running on that. We just about lost everything that my husband has worked hard to get for 25 years.
This healthcare thing is a joke as well. We live in Tennessee (and own a home in Seagrove as well), so ask anyone here about our great TennCare Ins. Obama's healthcare plan is very similar to TennCare. Just to let you know we pay over 1,200.00 a month for our family (with a high deductible). We also have friends in Canada and they hate the Universal Health Plan they have there.
I don't want anyone to think that I am not a compassionate person. We help people all the time. When the flood happened, my husband took his equipment and help people dig out from all the mud slides that we had here. We also took in a girl this summer because her parents kicked her out of their house and I helped her get into college.
I agree with everyone that you should help the less fortunate, I just feel like the government should stop taking from small business owners and distributing the money to people who don't want to work. My husband is in construction and we see this all the time. It is like my 90 year old grandfather said "People don't work like they use too and everyone wants something for nothing". This man fought for our country in WWII and is a democrat for all of you that think I am a stout Republican. I have voted both ways(we have a great democratic governor). After doing my homework, I believe democrats are all about handouts to certain people, but who helped us when we were having a tough time (we are still trying to get out of this mess).

I must say that for all of the hysteria about Obamacare, all I have heard so far (and I know it is early stages) from people experiencing the changes firsthand is positive.
And I am very tired of hearing how someone is being shortchanged just because someone else gets something - usually as a trade off for them working hard, not a handout.
Being poor or a minority may make you eligible or give you an edge for a scholarship, but you won't GET it unless you have worked your butt off to get good grades.
There are merit based scholarships and there are need based scholarships.
It can be frustrating when it seems like working hard and not having debt work against you - Papa Scooterbug said that if he had known how the financial aid system worked he would have bought everyone in the family a new car on credit before I applied for aid.
Why do you expect others to pay for your daughter's education if you are able to do so? Isn't that what you are complaining about? People getting perks from the government when they don't need the money?
My guess is that the reason your daughter didn't get that scholarship was that $12k a year in school fees and a 2nd beach home didn't exactly demonstrate a greater need than the other candidates.

I am also wondering if the child had chosen a school other than a "small Christian college in Alabama" if the scholarship situation would have been different. There are lots of grants and scholarships available out there, but I imagine the endowment of a small private Christian college is very limited.

If you think Affirmative Action stops after an application decision you're sadly mistaken. Graduates, Employment, etc... the handout continues because of the color of ones skin not the content of their character or effort put forth. Race is a determing factor for future student loans under the Federal Gov't. It never ends...

Federal health care tax credit to help small business | jacksonville.com.
Jeff Guy, the owner of Jacksonville-based 3 Sisters Chocolate, is happy that health care reform is going to give his business a tax credit for something he already does.Apparently there are some small business owners who think there is a positive piece to the health care reform.
"This is going to be a benefit to us; sounds great," he said

When affirmative action is working properly it isn't a HANDOUT nor is it giving an advantage to someone who is lacking in content of character. It is providing opportunity to someone with equally fine content of character who might not have had the opportunity otherwise.
I received financial aid in college. It was based simply on tax returns. My single mom worked two minimum wage jobs to send me to private schools all my life and then Uncle Sam helped out at the University of Illinois. I waited tables all through college and my mom still worked two jobs to send me some extra money (which I spent on beer but I digress).
Why all the stereotyping and generalizing? If you have the money to send your kids to school- great. If you don't (irrespective of your reasons or your work ethic) the good news is that in this country your kid might have some other options to help them out.
Why do folks who have done well complain that folks who haven't are getting help- like they are being cheated out of something. You've done well. You don't need help.

I am sorry, all I hear is whining and excuses.
You've either got the drive and ambition to get things done or you don't. If someone's skin color gives them an advantage (which I think is rarely the case post college or once you get to a certain level), find something that gives you an advantage.
I have never heard anyone whose intelligence and work ethic I respect use their race as the reason they didn't get a job or couldn't do something. I CAN name 5 things that I can use to give me an edge over someone else applying for the same job - regardless of skin color.
Or to paraphrase Sean Connery in the Rock "Losers whine about affirmative action and not getting scholarships, winners graduate and get great jobs."

Good point.
I believe there are some Christian parables that speak to this point.
The Prodigal Son: my kids have a hard time w/ this one; they say, "but the PS didn't deserve the father's forgiveness/kindness."
The workers who protested they'd worked longer in the vineyard say the late-comers shouldn't get the same pay--they don't deserve it.
It seems to be a very human instinct to be offended at perceived unfairness, but great moral teachers say we should try to overcome this instinct.
Unless you're seriously disadvantaging your family, give folks more than they deserve.

I was taught that even though some people get some help I don't, I still come out ahead - because my life without that help is a hell of a lot better then theirs with that help.
And who knows - I might need that help someday too. Sheet happens.
I can think of 467 worse things to spend tax money on than helping a hard working person get an education, children or the elderly get medical care, and a starving or homeless person get food or shelter.
And I bet everyone biatching about government handouts is still taking every single one THEY are eligible for or feel they are entitled to. They just call them stimulus jobs, scholarships, homestead exemptions, student loans, tax credits, and tax refunds instead of handouts.

Exactly.
My brother who lived in Seattle said the parking fee was on the honor system at the airport. Unfortunately the majority of people weren't paying so after 6 months they had to raise the fee for the honest folks that were paying. Not the best analogy but it's similar.
You're paying for your college and you're paying for theirs through taxes and higher tuition fees. Money doesn't grow on trees people.

That is the stupidest argument I have ever heard.
You help people go to college because it benefits our country to have an educated populace - from a social, economic, and tax base perspective.
And while the government may help by making student loans, the majority of scholarships are from private sources - not your tax dollars.

I agree with you Geo. BUT we had to sit our daughter down (she enters college this year) and explain need-based and merit-based scholarships to her. Toward the end of the school year when scholarship offers started coming in and she saw a couple friends, who were good, actively involved students with potential to do well in college, get scholarships to the same school she applied; she asked me if it was wrong of her to feel resentful that they got them and she didn't. She knew that across the board her scores, grades, and accomplishments were better. For her getting the scholarship would have been recognition for all her hard work and achievements. These were need-based scholarships and she simply doesn't qualify.
I told her she could be upset that UT offers very few merit-based scholarships but to please not be resentful of top qualifying students who get the need-based ones. She got a handful of smaller scholarships she can use but she was looking for the big bucks! Ha! (I told her to keep looking.

Take this as a compliment.
If your daughter's grades and test scores are better than those of the kids who won the need based scholarships
and she comes from a supportive family with enough resources to make her ineligible for the need based awards
then I am so not at all worried about her or her chances for success.

Me neither. We started saving for her education before she was even born. She has thanked us and will hopefully follow our example. In trying to make her feel more wanted we point out to her that she declined 2 large scholarships to University of Illinois. She is where she wants to be and if she proves herself can obtain scholarships/internships down the road.
