A busy Atlantic hurricane season ends Today, but the U.S. was spared of any major storms for a fifth straight year.

All told, 19 named storms formed in the Atlantic, the third-highest total on record, and 12 became hurricanes, the second-highest total on record.

In the U.S., Texas suffered the worst of the tropical weather, with flooding, deaths, and tens of millions of dollars in damage attributed to storms. But most of activity hit elsewhere, including Haiti, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Hurricane Wilma in 2005 was the last major hurricane of Category 3 or stronger to hit the U.S. The U.S. has never before gone more than five consecutive years without a major hurricane.

and we go out with a bang -- tornado watch just announced for Bay and Walton counties, until 2pm. Be careful and mindful when you are out and about today.

tornado watch = conditions are right for tornado to occur.

"The U.S. has never before gone more than five consecutive years without a major hurricane." you really had to add that? ;-)

I hear champagne corks popping at insurance agencies all across the state of Florida. Tonight they celebrate reaping yet another year of windfalls (pun intended) of cash--tomorrow they'll be hard at work jacking up the rates yet again and sending out non-renewal notices for next year.
