Anyone know anything about DH Horton builders starting a project with 5,000 homes in Walton Co? Sounds excessive to me, but it's what I'm hearing.

That sounds high. I do know that DR Horton has bought many lots in several different new developments, but I doubt those would add up to 5,000 in Walton Co alone. I know they are also building in Crestview and Niceville. I am told that DR Horton is one of the largest builders in the US.

D.H. Horton has several developements in my town. Cookie cutter homes. It makes you scream to see them. Same roof, same brick. Ugh. I hope this 5000 homes is wrong.

After I heard this "rumor" this morning, I saw signs indicating DH Horton was doing something on Don Bishop Road....sounds like Adams Homes all over again.

Horton is one of 4 builders in our subdivision and they are definitely not "cookie cutter" homes here in the DFW area. They have several plans to choose from. Have a reputation for quality somewhere close to the custom homes built in the area, although it would not be uncommon to see the same model within one block and you would likely confuse the subcontractors if you wanted much of a change to the model you chose.

They offer as many brick choices as any customs in the area, totally different rooflines on the homes and have reasonable success here with the quality of subcontractors (who are in high demand).

I haven't a clue about DRHorton in other areas of the county, but know their reputation holds up around here.

"Cookie Cutter" reminds me of the '60s song 'Little Boxes'. Thank you! I haven't thought of that song in a long time ..... Gotta go listen to it! :D

Horton did a couple of subdivisions in Santa Rosa County back in the late 90s. Pretty typical tract homes, usually somewhere between 1400 and 2200sf if I remember right. Build quality/fit & finish wasn't quite as good as Adams, but way better than Henry if you're talking those kinds of builders. Their target buyer seemed to be an enlisted person at Hurlburt who was married with a couple of kids, and was priced accordingly.

Not the most exciting homes or neighborhoods, but it was decent housing built to new hurricane codes for middle class families, and I'd be all for more homes that are affordable to the people who live and work here year round.

But on the plus side...you can make your own belt! :D

Snakes slithering into Baymeadows neighborhood

Residents near the Old Baymeadows Golf Course (Jacksonville, FL) say snakes are taking over their yards, and their concerns are igniting another battle with a big-time developer.

Local resident Mike Ivey says he's seen four potentially deadly water moccasins in a matter of hours on his property. He says it appears they're all coming from a wooded area, which backs up to the property once owned by the Baymeadows Golf Club.

?Due to the inactivity of the golf course, the snakes are seeking the sprinkler systems of the residents because of the dryness and lack of rain we've had," says Ivey.

On Wednesday, a neighbor killed a 4-foot snake identified by Animal Control as a black indigo, which they say will bite, but is not poisonous.

With snakes literally coming out of the woodwork, Ivey says he put up a sign warning joggers and people with kids to stay away.

?It's very disheartening to live here and put up with the snakes,? says homeowner Jay Vogeley. ?[It?s] scary."

Ivey blames the owners of the property, Developer D.R. Horton, for not maintaining the golf course. Homeowners have been in a fight with D.R. Horton before when the developer?s plans to build condos in a heavily populated area were axed by the city.

Now, homeowners say the developer hasn't cut the grass in weeks, which violates city code. Officials with Animal Control agreed it may be the root of the snake problem.

?All of this foliage in this time of year, with the duck nests,? says Little Maddox with Animal Control, ?the area that has not been mowed, the drought season, and with the sprinkler system that comes on, [the snakes are] looking for moisture and food."

Experts say people in the area need to watch where they walk, and avoid areas that are overgrown. They say if you run into a snake, don't panic. It could get excited, like you, and attack.

So far, no one has been bitten by a snake. Representatives with D.R. Horton were not available for comment on the issue.
