I'll have to admit that I've been "The Ugly American" and worn a Gator t-shirt in Roma. It worked to my advantage in Tuscany. I knew that a bunch of our art students were studying there (UGA summer abroad). As I was walking down the street in Cortona (the hill town made famous by Frances Mayes in "Under The Tuscan Sun") I heard "Dr. R."! It was one of my students! I was so happy to see him. Small world.:D

oh heck, we were the tacky american backpackers for months! got some stares by just a few older italian mamas on the train. but, we always used our manners, especially in France, and were treated very well by all. we did observe some rather rude, spoiled americans here and there. quite demanding, and probably having a hard time getting around having to figure stuff out for themselves, eating foreign food and all.... and most probably not even making a basic attempt to speak the language

I always try to brush up on the language of the country I'm visiting with the exception of Asia. That is just out of my comfort zone.

This is always my bugaboo. I always try and act like a nice guest whenever I travel, because I have seen my fair share of this ugliness. It is my experience that you get what you deserve. We had a French waiter last night that I just wanted to hug...he apologized for having a little trouble translating the menu for us. I stand in awe of how many languages many Europeans learn and it makes me feel el stupido!

Well, we are coming home to America today...I am ready.

Traveling abroad is a not-to-miss experience, but it's great to get home.

Hubby is halfway around the world. Just talked to him. He will arrive in Sydney tomorrow evening. I couldn't tolerate being on a plane that long.

Back in the USA!
You don't know how lucky you are boy.
Back in the US ... back in the US... back in the USA!
(My apologies to The Beatles.)

We are back on American soil! I am in a slight coma, but Mr. Kitty says it is safe for me to go to bed now. 10 hours on a plane has reminded me to be very nice to him when he returns from these trips. It was oh so wonderful and I am not really proud to say I had to pay duty this trip. I blame it on Mr. K who kept telling me to "buy it". :D I have unpacked my suitcase and returned phone calls.
