It's even worse when you're actually paying for a trip. You find the flights you want, you wait until your husband comes home from work to see if it meshes with his schedule...and the price has doubled. :bang: We've learned the hard way that when we see a fare we like, we grab it.
I hear you--he found the flights about 2 weeks ago, but we hadn't decided for sure we were making the trip. Then we decided, tried to book last night, no dice. Now it's a matter of if we want to pay for the tickets and come anyway, which really hurts considering it's a short trip, AND we were counting on free flights.

Peapod, we live in st. louis and it's not a bad drive. We can make it door to door in 12 hours. If you think about it, you'd spend almost that much time flying anyway. By the time you drive to the airport -- get there 2 hours early, to have an hour delay...ect. Might be an option!

We ususally do drive; Lordy, I've made that drive more times than I can count! But this time we'll have no kids with us, so we could save some time and headache by flying. And we only have 4 days, so it's a lot to lose 2 whole days from travel.

Can you fly into Pensacola and drive over?

Mobile??? This is too sad to have EARNED those miles yet cannot use them.
I am glad I never bothered with accruing them. Almost seems useless doesn't it? :bang:

We always fly Delta and we are flying into PCB for this trip. Last year when I was there we drove down, so I am looking forward to it being just the two of us and flying. Definately gives us more time in the area.

I hope you find something peapod!!!

Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner! Yes, we can fly to Mobile--that's our closest option. So far, it's our only option if we use the miles as planned. Just a bummer, though, because the flight isn't direct, so it'll take about 6 hours to get there, then we'll have to drive from Mobile... And this was supposed to be a relaxed no-worries trip. I realize I'm whining... :bang:
And, YES, the miles do feel useless, I agree totally.

Delta is really hurting themselves and their passengers. Canceling flights, late takeoffs, poor customer service...I know of three families that will NEVER fly them again and this all happened in a span of four days. I am sad to see this happen...competiton helps us all.

We spent 9 hours time getting there flying from DFW/Memphis/Fort Walton Beach and renting a car. Could have driven in 13 hrs.

I know, it's horrible. My husband and I were talking last night, and he said a friend had just commented the other day that frequent flyer miles have become nearly worthless. What's frustrating is that when we originally looked at the dates and flights, there was availability. Then, went back last night, the seats were gone. We spoke with an agent today, and the agent said it's the DFW/Ft. Walton leg of the trip that's unavailable; the St. Louis/DFW part of the flight is open. Grrrrrr...!
We have an "in" at Delta (my brother) who can look at the seat availability for every flight and tell us whether it's in jeopardy of being cancelled or, at the other extreme, too full and risky for getting bumped (or for not getting our Mom on a flight since she flies free as a parent of a Delta employee). That helps us quite often.
