Breaking right now...

A US Air Airbus lost both engines on takeoff coming out of Laguardia and crash landed in the Hudson river right near the Intrepid Aircraft Carrier Museum. Aircraft is in one piece surrounded by boats. No word on passengers...there were about 135 passengers. Keep your fingers crossed...

Early reports state that the pilot said that the aircraft flew through a flock of Canadian Geese and lost both engines. Given the circumstances it appears that the ditching went as well as it ever could.

Between the Continental flight that crashed taking off from Denver and this one, I think there will be some calls for additional safety checks.

MSNBC is not reporting any fatalities or injuries yet - the picture looks like they are evacuating people - lots of seat cushions in the water and people w/ yellow life vests.

CNN is interviewing a passenger who said that he believes everyone got off the plane safely and onto boats. If true, that is amazing.

Haven't heard anything about fatalities. The guy who was just interviewd on MSNBC said he didn't know of any, and he was the first on the scene.

The DEN Continental flight had nothing to do with birds. These accidents are two totally different animals...

Oh, I know - it's just that with 2 plane crashes splashed across the news within weeks of each other, I assume there will be some knee-jerk reaction.

It is amazing that the plane held together so well on impact. Someone just described the Hudson River as a wind tunnel so maybe the ground speed was much less than otherwise??

I don't recall another flight that lost both engines on takeoff. I have been on several flights that lost one engine but it must be eerie and quiet when both engines are gone. :sosad:

This pic is surreal.
