The only thing I can think of is that they put those nuts through for the..um..."entertainment factor". 
I was not surprised by most of the choices, even Tatiana can sort of sing (as opposed to Bikini Girl
) even though she ain't right, and she cannot possibly make it very far with America voting. But, I seriously question the choices of "Norman Gentle" and some others.

I saw that Joanna Pacitti made it but has since been declared ineligible. She's out, replaced by Felicia Barton.
Oh, man...I am behind and have the last two weeks TiVoed, but I watched the last hour of AI last night, because I couldn't stay away. Y'all are so right about that Tatiana!!! Ho-boy, she is skeery! I plan on catching up later today.

I think there were some that I didn't remember, maybe some I hadn't seen? They all sort of run together "at this stage in the competition".
I don't see a James listed as a semifinalist on the web site. Headband guy with the crackhead mother is Nathaniel. Alter ego guy is Nick aka 'Normund'.
