I don't get the charity thing either. Yes, I think it's nice to send school supplies to Africa, but they're missing the boat in one aspect--where's the connection to music anywhere? AI is a music show. I would be much more impressed with their charity fundraising if they tossed in a bit of money for music education. So many music programs have been cut in the schools and that's a pity. Yes, teach the poor kiddies how to read and write, but nourish their souls if you can. Music education!!
Good point Mermy. Simon Cowell's visit to Africa doesn't seem the least bit sincere either. It would be wonderful to see some of those funds go to music related programs. In the inner cities, lots of children turn to music, like rap, which is an art form in itself with it's rythym and rhyming. Almost poetic. Would be nice to see those kids exposed to other types of music, and learn at the same time about respect for woman and non use of certain words we find in the rap industry.
Also, the costs of instruments for rentals and/or purchase is extremely high. Donating instruments and funds for teachers would go a long way for children who have interest, but can't afford the costs.
My nephew is just hankering to play on the big piano (besides his little store bought organs) , and we're looking it to and found the prices of lessons extremely high. It would be wonderful if AI did have some sort of music scholarship programs. Look at Josh Groban, he played instruments, but no one really noticed he could actually sing until he was much older.
