I have never been to New Orleans and my nephew is planning a trip to film a scene there. I don't like going places that I don't know my way around. I have always heard of New Orleans as a sort of crazy party town.
What we are looking for specifically is, a live venue, with jazz, not just any jazz, and not too commercial or touristy, but Raw energy, music like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, not swing style, it is for a very important scene, and so perhaps someone here has been there and can recommend a venue, we are planning the trip in the next week.
Does anyone know of anything like this?:dunno:

I live here now but I was born and raised in N.O. for 53 years. N,O, is a party town if you want to party. The places with all of the Jazz music down there would mostly be in the French Quarter. They are everywhere down there. You could try the Maple Leaf and see who is playing there. That is in Uptown New Orleans and not in the quarter. Try going on Nola.com and it will tell you who is playing where and when. I know you will have a great time. All tourists love New Orleans. My nephew works in the film industry down there. You should probably scout out the quarter. There is raw jazz everywhere down there. Good luck and write back if you need any more info. Brenda

Let me see if I undestand. You are looking for a place to film or actually listen to music? The places that feature the kind of jazz you mention are not going to let a crew come in and film without some arrangements being made. 'Swing' jazz as you call it is what is being created at the grass roots level now, and there are a number of small spots that feature that kind of music you might be able to walk into and use as your set. Buy everyone alcohol and you will be in like a local.

...grab a Go-Cup full of your favorite beverage and just hit the streets--lots of raw jazz talent on every block....no cover charge, no drink minimums...just enjoy the music, dance and toss a buck or two in the hat.
