I do not know any details other than it was just announced on the radio that the father's body was just found.

Just read it on CNN. I was so hoping against this.

This is heartbreaking and sad. I feel so for the family. It's difficult to imagine how this took place...and how even the mother and kids survived. My thoughts and prayers go out to them.

Let this be a reminder to each of us though...if you find yourself in a similar situation the statistics show that it's better to stay with the car.

Allifunn. it's not that bad in Oregon, I grew up right around that area as a kid and since then it has really grown. Think of all that Oregon wine we drink......it's from this same area. Oregon is know for it being cold and wet and that makes for a really bad situation tho?

The roads in question are remote, and if you leave the road, there are huge elevation changes making walking very difficult.

The area in question is remote. several years ago a 500 thousand acre fire scorched the area. There are higher mountains... but not too many steeper ones! The slopes are littered with logging slash and foot travel very hard. The road is closed in winter and is not used. The only exit is by road. This fellows mistake was leaving the road. The drainages wind endlessly and he would become disoriented quickly. There is nothing odd about it, people get lost and die in southwest oregon every year. This one was picked up by the news. It is fortunate that anyone survived. Had family not been looking ... all would have perished!
