I think that on this board, I would be preachin' to the choir. I think you guys are well informed people, and that I do not need to explain the capitalist system which needs its gears greased often. buy, buy, buy. :bang: It will break, so you can throw it away and buy a new and improved one.

You've got me on this one. I don't think there's anything more irritating than owning things that are MADE to break irreparably. Things that cannot be fixed even when you get a platoon of engineers on the job. Like my Rowenta (big $$) iron that couldn't be fixed by either my engineer father, husband, or brother. :sosad: It was made to be replaced not repaired.

Back to the mattress issue, has anyone looked at Ikea's Swedish mattresses? I gather it's somewhat the same concept as Temperpedic but less expensive. I'd be reluctant to plunk down three grand for a mattress I wasn't sure would work for me, seeing that it's so different from traditional coils, but I might want to "test drive" on an Ikea version. www.ikea.com

Tempur-pedic offers a 90 day trial period. I don't know if they charge a reshelving fee, but my guess is that even unsatisfied customers hate moving mattresses, so they probably keep them.

Here is their policy from www.tempurpedic.com :

90 Night In-Home Trial

We want to make buying a Swedish Sleep System? or mattress an easy decision. After you place your order directly with Tempur-Pedic, sleep on it for 90 nights.*
Because of its unique pressure-relieving properties, the Tempur-Pedic? Swedish Mattress? may require a short adjustment period while your body grows accustomed to a revolutionary new way of sleeping. All we ask is that you sleep on the mattress for at least two weeks; thereafter, at any time during the trial period, if you are dissatisfied, we will pick up everything at our expense?we?ll reimburse the full purchase price, except for the original shipping/set-up cost.**
*The 90 night trial offer is available only on Tempur-Pedic factory direct mattress purchases (excluding adjustable foundations/frames). Adjustable foundations/frames, pillows, cushions, and accessories do not have a trial period.
**If delivered to remote locations or outside the 48 contiguous states, additional shipping surcharges will apply. Shipping charges are quoted at time of return.

Mermaid do your research. Ikea furniture is generally starter stuff and not well made, but their cabinets have a legendary following and are the greatest bang for the buck. (I do not have them, I am just obsessed with such things.) Try to figure out if Ikea makes its mattresses like its cabinets or its furniture. I haven't heard yet.

I'm very familiar with Ikea--we've been shopping at the one in Chicago for years now, and have been to the new one in Atlanta a few times since it opened, too. I've found that their products are all over the place in terms of quality, though the prices for all are uniformly low. Many of their smaller items are exceedingly well-made. Others not. Personally, I think the quality has fallen since they've started opening more stores. It never used to be that you'd go to Ikea and see rickety end tables, as we did on our last trip. :sosad: We looked at their sofas as possibilities for our condo and we were disappointed when we saw them. Great looking in the catalog, not so for real! We also checked out the kitchen cabinets. Their high-end models were fine. The starter lines were so ugly we couldn't possibly consider putting them into our condo.

I mentioned Ikea's mattresses because we gave them a good look (more out of curiosity than anything else) and they did appear worth a second glance if you were in the market for something other than the traditional coil mattress. The prices were low enough that if you decided it wasn't your cup of tea, you wouldn't have invested a small fortune.

I purchased a deluxe queen about 5 months ago after a short trial with Kings Down. I've had my 2 tempur-pedic pillows for years. I've tried all the major brands and short of a Dux bed (aprox $5-6k) it offers the most comfort. If you suffer any ergonomic injuries, you'll find this is the best therapy money can buy. The only problem is that you won't be able to take it with you on vacations. (but you can take the pillows) The comment about the mites is very valid... mites can't live in the foam. Also the cost analysis is spot on. I'm always amazed that I'm more willing to spend money on cars or toys but less willing to spend serious money on something that's good for my body. My advice... go for the real thing.

Timely thread for us! SJ, THANKS for the info on the trial program....we soon will be getting the mattresses for new house down there....and don't want to make any more mistakes!!! We are so serious about sleep comfort and actually looked at these temper-pedics this past weekend....it's soooo impossible to know just by lying down on one for 2 minutes in a store!!!
Anyway, we bought a Stearns-Foster last year and are soooo unhappy with it....very disappointed. I don't know if we got the wrong kind or what, but it makes me crazy to think we finally got one and it is so disappointing.....
soooo we are on the hunt and APPRECIATE all this info.....

Be sure to note this important line in the 90 day trial:

"*The 90 night trial offer is available only on Tempur-Pedic factory direct mattress purchases(excluding adjustable foundations/frames)."

Some interesting info about these beds can be found at the link provided.

http://www.chem-tox.com/guest/guestbook.html

We have researched these beds for several years and the stories of outgassing and toxic chemicals are getting more frequent. You may want to research this for yourself.

There are numerous articles if you search for outgassing of temperpeautic beds under google.

good luck

We have a Select Comfort, otherwise known as a Sleep Number bed, and won't ever buy a different type of bed. We love it and appreciate it more every time we travel. We sleep better and no aches or pains in the morning. We had a temperpedic pad on one of our beds and found that it kept the body heat in too much. I don't know if the temperpedic bed would do the same thing.

Good point Peaboy. Today, all mattresses can be bad. Most are made from petrolium based products, and to reduce the flamability, they are coated with extremely toxic chemicals to make them "safer."
