I found this a very interesting article and am very glad the fashion industry is finally waking up. It took them too long IMHO!!!!

You have to wonder, what took them so long? I'm all for being slim and trim but those sticks on legs wearing expensive clothing do not appeal. The next thing after asking models to gain a pound or two is to make them smile! Why do they glower when they're wearing beautiful clothing? I'd be wearing a grin from ear to ear. I'm sick of looking at grimacing models.

I have nothing against skinny models, but I would prefer to see a mix of body shapes and sizes.

I had a good friend in Denver who was a very successful model. She got her start in Milan; she was the real thing. She told me a few stories.
Modeling agencies are not particularly interested in fit, healthy and feminine looking women, and it probably never will be.
Clothes show well on tall, thin women. Always have, always will.
But the standard has become *extreme* the past ten years or so.
The people in Madrid were making a statement, and may yet back down.
However, maybe people will think twice before making the next hollow-eyed, Kate Moss-like waif the new modeling superstar.

I like being thin, I don't want to be fat.
But I have known far too many women with eating disorders. More than one was hospitalized. It's really sad and sick, and I hate to see that kind of gaunt look so celebrated.

Our society is so polarized these days. There are those who have a neurotic fetish about food and being slender, and then there are those who get married and/or turn 30 and then immediately gain the obligatory 50 pounds.
I guess I just wish there could be a happy medium.

Cil - you are way too smart and always so balanced and on target. I'm going to start calling you Miss Smarty Pants!!! ;-) with only admiration in my heart though.

thanks for your insight in to this fat/skinny society. these societal issues are really quite complex and impact all of us.

My first concern with my weight is my health. I want to be alive for awhile, and will probably have a better shot at it if my weight is within healthful limits. There is some serious heart and cholesterol history in my family too. Weight is something that I can control, and hopefully the other medical concerns will stay away if I eat right most of the time and exercise.

The second concern is financial. I can't afford to buy new clothes just because I grow out of the old ones. I've been fairly heavy before and had a whole gamut of sizes in my closet. It was ridiculous, expensive, and I refuse to do it again.

So yes, like Cil, I like being on the thin side. I will never forget my son commenting on a friend's truly obese mother. He said, "Mom, please don't ever look like that. It would be so embarrassing." I started eating better the next day- that was some serious motivation!

Jgarg...you have the cutest figure ever! I can not even imagine you being the slightest bit heavy!
