Obama's grandmother dies after long battle with cancer
Posted: 04:44 PM ET
(CNN) — Just over a week after he took a break from the campaign trail to visit his ailing grandmother, Barack Obama's campaign said that 85-year-old Madelyn Dunham had died "peacefully" after a battle with cancer.
"She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility," said Obama and half-sister Maya Soetoro-Ng in a statement released by the campaign Monday afternoon. "She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances. She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure.
Obama and Soetoro-Ng said there would be a "small private ceremony at a later date."
Dunham helped raise the Illinois senator during his teen years in Honolulu.

I just saw this too. So sad that if she had lived a little more than 24 hours more, she would have seen him become president (if all predictions are correct). Obama must just be devastated.

Prayers to him and his family.

Agreed. I am glad he had the opportunity to go and see her last week.

I'm sure Barack feels he will feel her presence by his side tomorrow.

My prayers are with the Obama family. Toot will still see his victory!

Think of it this way. She probably already knows the result of tomorrow's election. All things that happen are happening now...not yesterday or tomorrow...NOW. She has access to more nows than we do from her perspective. Sorry if that sounds a little "woo-woo", as my wife calls it, but have you ever experienced anything but the present (now) except in your mind?

Madelyn Dunham's vote will count

Kevin Cronin, Hawaii's chief election officer for the state, tells Eli Sanders that Obama's grandmother has voted, and her vote will be counted, despite her having died before election day:
Ms. Dunham’s absentee mail ballot was received and reviewed under the Hawaii standards for processing absentee mail ballots… She was alive at that time. Her ballot will be opened tomorrow, and it will be counted in the same way that all absentee voters would be treated under our law.

Nobody who has put that kind of time and energy into a campaign should have to deal with a death as untimely as this would appear to be.
